Peter Knowles Posted August 4, 2002 Posted August 4, 2002 I'm not sure the solution to this problem involves any tinkering with FileMaker, but I'm hoping someone else has encountered (and solved) this problem before, or have some ideas about what might be going on. I run a number of separate FileMaker databases and their related HTML files for use over the Web. They all work fine, except... My laptop (an HP Omnibook) cannot load the pages when I log in from home with my dialup ISP connection. (What happens when I attempt to load a page is it searches for a long time <"Contacing host>" then the error message I get says "There was no response. The server could be down or is not responding.") However, the pages load fine from my laptop when I'm not using my ISP and am connected to the same network using ethernet...BUT it works fine using a different computer (a newer iBook, and a much older Packard Bell) from my home with the same ISP connection. Others are able to access the pages because we still get guestbook hits from all over, so the problem seems to be with my Omnibook. Any possible ideas about what isn't happening? Again, I apologize if this request doesn't squarely reside in the realm of this thread, but I'm stumped, and it seems to have some relationship with the FileMaker files I'm running over the web. Help if you can? Thanks in advance, Peter Knowles
trevorg Posted August 4, 2002 Posted August 4, 2002 If you are using a fully qualified domain name (www.dotsomething...), try using the IP address of the server. Can you ping the server from home on that computer? It's most likely a name resolution problem. Maybe the omnibook is setup to use an internal name server at the office that you can't reach outside of the network? Maybe you have a static hosts file that only works while inside the office? I'm just taking some possible stabs...
Anatoli Posted August 4, 2002 Posted August 4, 2002 IMHO -- the problem is not related to FM. As trevorg suggested it can be lot of things -- almost anything. I'll suggest talking to your IT admin.
