linking 'foreign files' to filemaker records

Hi all

I'm new to this forum, so apologies if this has been covered before / elsewhere!

We use a filemaker (currently 4.1, about to be 5.5) solution developed over a number of years to provide job tickets, contact info, generate quotes, store product info etc - we do most of the correspondence in filemaker, so it's easy to relate to the job ticket.

Is it possible to "link" other documents (eg word or excel files) by showing their file name in the jobticket and then making them into clickable icons that launch the relevant file???

Any thoughts would be appreciated

Thanks!

Windows OLE allows this kind of linking into a Filemaker Container field. Third party applications like the Troi File plugin or WinBatch can also launch file via a filename in a field.

Thanks for that!

We're only writing for Mac, so I guess the OLE suggestion doesn't apply in this case - I had heard of the troi plugins and wondered if that was the best way forward...

Cheers

Hello,

I recently 'posted' a reply to another 'post' about how to 'open' MS Word documents from within FileMaker. In my 'reply post', I discuss how to store the MS Word files; how to 'reference' the MS Word files within FileMaker; and how to 'get' FileMaker to 'open' these MS Word files. Although my discussion relates to the legal industry, I think that it will have some ideas that could benefit you.
