I was wondering... I am having trouble program sharing FM 5.5... is it a networkable program? We have only installed it on one computer, we are just trying to get everyone to access it. If it is... what settings are we missing? We have activated File Sharing, activated the proper groups and set the executables and proper files to be shared. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hi:

Make sure you have the file sharing set to multi user on the "server" machine. Then you need to install a version of FM on each user's machine. Then the users use the Hosts button in the Open dialog to locate the server machine.

On a side note, many experts here would suggest using FM Server on a dedicated machine instead of this setup.

Filemaker is its own networking environment. Turn File Sharing OFF (that's right, OFF) on the host machine. Open the files to be shared on the host machine. On the guest machines, launch FileMaker (must be installed on each guest machine), pull down the File Menu to "Open", click the "hosts" button and select the shared file on the host machine you wish to open.

If on the host machine File Sharing is turned on, you will have nothing but instability and grief. Don't do it, regardless of the justification or temptation.

I think there may be some confusion with file sharing. In MacOS, there is a File Sharing Control Panel and in FM there is Sharing, which must be set to multi-user for others to find the host.
