Remote FM SLOW - was "Update remote database"

Featured Replies

OK, we got it working through an IP address in FileMaker (with a firewall). Problem: it took 45 minutes to open (for our person across the country) and pretty much forever to do a "Find." When we test it here, it is just as quick as opening and using it on our own network. To make it useable, it needs to be a lot faster. Is there something else we need to do? We are on dsl at both ends.

Thank you.

You need to be with good peering between both ends. Pick the same ISP provider. Ask them also about such delays.

Trace where the packets are travelling with some Traceroute program.

In worst case go to the Qwest or other reliable company and get 64-128 line from them.

Check that the drive, the database files are on, is not shared. This can cause the related files to be opened directly by the master file. If this is the case you will experience very slow access to related files.

Good Luck.

Depending upon the number of user, I would suggest an even cheaper yet more reliable solution. Setup a spare workstation or two at the main office, with Timbuktu installed. Then connect via Timbuktu over the internet and remorely control that machine.

The performance will be far better than anything you could ever expect out of a WAN type system and will only be every so slightly slower than directly working on the LAN.
