I recently downloaded FM 6 and am interested in the instant web publishing.

I was able to very quickly get the provided Web Companion and template file

(Time cards)to be seen and used across the intranet at work (although some

of the Web Companion scripts didn't work properly - Submit launched new

page).

I'd like to use our company's home page to link to the Time Cards file, but

WITHOUT seeing the Web companion pages or layout. I've searched all around

and everyone seems to agree this can be done, but have not been able to

find out how.

Anyone know? (not trying to access outside of office; maybe next step)

Thanks,

BC

I don't use Instant Web Publishing but you should be able to change from the built-in FMP page to your own custom index.html or default.htm page by re-configuring the Web Companion. I think you can do this with IWP still on and CWP off.

For restricting access, you should be able to find IP address restriction under WC configuration, too. You can use wildcard characters (e.g. 127.127.*.*).

Hope this helps.

The more I look into this, the more it appears I will need to learn HTML or CDML. Wasn't quite prepared for that.

Is there a realtively easy way using Pagemill or some other web creator?

Thanks

If you can, get a copy of Claris Home Page 3.0. Trial versions may be still floating around the net. It was deesigned as the CDML tool for FMP and it has wizards to get some pages up and running cheap.

Second choice may be Dreamweaver. There is a free CDML extension floating round (search the Forums) that displays the CDML codes graphically but alas offers little of the real functionality that HP3 provides.

I didn't care for HomePage but it was designed to work well w/CDML and there's still documentation out there that'll help you through it, as Vaughan says.

I primarily used PageMill for my FMP projects but there are some quirks you should know about.... The biggest quirk is that it will change some of your FMP code w/out you knowing... not often but it happens (mostly when making links of fields fmp-linkrecid and stuff).

I am trying Dreamweaver now and it is definitely the best at not changing your code but it's still not perfect. It's also harder to nest tables in Dreamweaver than little old PageMill.

The good news is that you can design all your pages in whatever and then add the bits of CDML code afterward. It's not too bad for simple projects.

Good luck.

hi,

I use Adobe's golive and never tried CHP. Does CHP works better than GL? Will it save time on entering code? So far GL has done the tricks for me i wanted to do and it never changes code...

I don't know if I have this straight, but in a nutshell... Claris branched off from Apple and made software, including FMP. FileMaker, Inc. branched off from Claris and Claris was re-absorbed into Apple.

Claris Home Page was designed to integrate with FileMaker Pro very, very well. Of course, it is old now but there are docs and stuff still out there as Vaughan mentioned. I think it will be quicker to code but if you're not having trouble with Go Live and you know it well, I don't think it'll be worth your switching.

The documentation with FMP 6 relating to instant web publishing shows how to put in a custom home page, the expanded list of script statements that can be used with IWP, and how to use the Toggle Status Area[hide] statement to get away from the IWP frame. Of course, you need to provide equivalent functions with buttons on your own layouts - using the limited list of script statements and limited number of steps. I am trying to get this going at present and running into grief with inaccurate rendering by IWP and getting it to switch between Find and Browse modes.
