FM 5.0v3, Mac OS 8.1, :591, new crashes

Featured Replies

Hi, everyone,

We have FM 5.0v3, web companion v6, on Mac OS 8.1. We also have Webstar 4.0 on port 80. This setup has been working reliably for 2 years, but lately FM started crashing. Incidentally, it was after we increased our number of DBs being served, _and_ we moved the computer out from behind a firewall. Then two things happened:

1) It would play a chime that sounds like C-F-C-A on an electric organ.

2) Then a few days later FM began crashing every day or so.

I reinstalled the operating system on the computer and this seemed to fix the problem for a few months.

But recently I heard those chimes again, and now FM has crashed twice in two days.

Webstar tells me that we get plenty of calls on port 8080 from (I think) nimda, but my FM log doesn't show any on 591.

Norton can't find any disk problems or viruses.

Could it be a low memory problem? How do I know how much memory FM needs?

Too much access to FM? How can I tell by looking in the log? We don't get a lot of traffic on this server.

Or what?

In case this unanswered question has just been burning in someone's mind, here are the results.

The chiming was our cable modem giving a warning about losing its connection, and was not connected to the FM crashes. . .

By the embarrassing process of announcing a DB to a large group, I found out that FM was crashing when it reached its 10 user limit. I would think it should do something a little more gracious like politely say "no", but the copy we had crashed when more than 10 people tried to access the web-served DBs. Bad karma.

I solved it by getting FMU 6. Running on OS 9.1, it hasn't crashed in a few weeks. The ISP seems to be behaving better now, too. Knock on wood.

1. I'm glad you found your answer.

2. It is good to know about the chimes, how sweet.

3. The original post failed to mention (which I appreciate as a Psychic Procrastinator) that you were not using Unlimited and that you had more than 10 clients. smile.gif

Hey Andy, thanks for taking the time to post a follow-up to your own question. After 11 months it's amazing you even remembered about the Forums at all!

I'm sure somebody else is going to find your post very helpful in the future.
