Insert a Calculated Result

How do I use the "insert a calculated result" field in a script to show the result in a database? confused.gif

Hey Dobbers,

I just did a search for [color:"red"] "insert calculated result" , because I remembered some one had answered this question recently. Take a look reponse by Russ not long ago.

It is an example of how this is used.

You just need to use the script step, with a destination field for the result. And then have a layout which will display the field so you can see the results.

Set Field is probably a better option (because it doesn't rely on the field being on the layout you are working on when the scrip is running) but Set Field will not set non-allowable characters in certain types of fields. For example if your field is a date format field, then Set Field [Field,"<3/4/2003"] will not work (because the "<" is not a valid date character) but Insert Calculated Result [Field,"<3/4/2003"] will work. This is mainly used in scripting date range finds.

As this came up recently in another post, what else is the "insert calculated result" good for other than when dates are concerned? I realized that this was the first time I had used this script step, and was wondering if it trumped "set field" in other situations?
