Newbies Jimmyjazz Posted April 22, 2003 Newbies Posted April 22, 2003 Hello, I am new to this list. I am the manager of a language lab at a small college and I have created a database to catalogue the language materials, which I'm also serving on the web. I used FMP 4 and OS 9.x and Claris HomePage to put together the database. Now I am moving to OS X. I have a few questions and this first one has probably been answered somewhere. I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder about the solution. First, I just got FMP 6 and I am using it with OX 10.2.5. Is it possible to serve the database logging-in as a non-admin user in OS X? Yesterday I found that it would not work if I logged in as a non-admin user. I feel that the computer and system would be better protected if the user serving the database is not an administrator. Any ideas? I also had problems using the Instant Publisher in FMP 6. The layout had problems (I tried to use pop-up lists) and the fields on the search page kind of blended together which looked confusing. Also when I did a search and the results were in a table, when I clicked on a record to see more information in form view, I would get unexpected results. The records that would come up were often not the record I wanted. Repeatedly clicking on the same record, that is using the back button to go back to the search results page, gave different results each time. Is this a known bug? I found on this forum that it is possible to turn off Instant Publishing, which I did and then moved my HTML files from FMP 4 to 6, and they work perfectly. That was the best thing that happened yesterday. Searches and results now work as expected. I realize now that FMP 4/plus Claris Home Page was a great, simple solution. FMP 6 standard only allows 10 unique IP connections in a 12 hour period. I may never have 10 connections, on one day, but it could happen. 15 or 20 would be better for me. For this database, I can't justify buying FMP Unlimited, neither to myself nor to the people that control the money. I have 16 computers in my language lab and teachers have computers in their offices. My database may never have much demand, but I am trying to make the materials more accessible. Thank you, Jim
cjaeger Posted April 22, 2003 Posted April 22, 2003 1) Admin User - try reinstalling FileMaker Pro as the (nonpriviledged) user you want to run the database 2) Instant Publishing - never had this Problem with IE 5. There are different Layout options, try some ofthe simpler Layouts for your browser 3) IP Address restriction I sometimes use a proxy to proxy all requests on port 8080 to port 591 on my machine. While not exactly advertised by FileMaker, Inc, WebCompanion allows proxied queries (and thus unlimited users/ips). Another alternative is using FXPHP, a PHP Skript which will query FileMaker via XML.
Newbies Jimmyjazz Posted April 25, 2003 Author Newbies Posted April 25, 2003 Thank you. Is there some place I can learn about using a proxy to make the FCP request? I know the words-proxy, request, port-, but I have no idea about how to use/set it up. Thanks again, Jim
Anatoli Posted April 27, 2003 Posted April 27, 2003 That will breach FM license. It can work obviously, but you will use FM without valid license as SW pirate.
