May 25, 200322 yr I downloaded the Trial version of the FM Server. I hosted two relational FMDB and had them "served up" by starting the server on Mac 10.2.6. We used the DB from a remote location by specifying a host, opening the DB and entered data. Seemed to work fine for 2 days. Then I went to the server computer, opened the DB and it said file was damaged, use recover. When I recovered, the last 2 days of data were missing. What's up? I'm getting a bad feeling about converting to FM Server. Why not just keep hosting without it? Thank you! Help.
May 25, 200322 yr The problem is FM Server, it's FM Server under OS X. FM client is a problem too (I proved that again Friday). If you want to use FM Server on a Mac, stick with OS 9 for now. FM Inc. has warnings of possible data corruption using Server under OS X. Just what you want in a sever product. FM Server is VERY stable under OS 9, just turn off all unused extensions and use Clarkwood Software's Peek-a-Boo to give processor cycle priority to Server. This solves the problem of Finder hogging processor cycles when clicked into the foreground. We have 24 server years of experience with this configuration at one of our clients, works fine. -bd
May 29, 200322 yr Author Great, I bought a new 17" imac G4 that doesn't boot in 9. How can FM sell a X product with no X performance?
June 4, 200322 yr I have run FM Server under OSX for over a year without one crash. I have had database corruption issues upon closing the files but have been able to work around this issue by backing up the databases, then close the server, and reverting to the backup files prior to reopening the server. The only other issue is the inability for FM Server under OSX to backup to or from a multiple volume disk such as RAID. Otherwise, I am very happy with the OSX version.
June 4, 200322 yr Oh my, such hassle with FM server for simple reason -- to be happy with OSX? All companies I work for, will kick my butt with such procedures -- rightly.
June 4, 200322 yr what's the problem of using an old PC as a linux fmserver box?. One machine, one task. And a lot cheaper than your pretty iMac. Save that for something useful like FileMaker Client and a couple of games.
June 4, 200322 yr And the results posted here with FM Linux server where just amazing! I bet they where 10 times better, than the MacX and without problems.
June 4, 200322 yr servers are so boring ... they just sit in a corner and serve data. They don't have to be pretty. they don't have to have a screen, either. just limit them to the one task they are set up for and (hopefully) forget about them. I's just a shame to sacrifice a Mac for such a simple task.
June 5, 200322 yr servers are so boring ... they just sit in a corner and serve data. They don't have to be pretty. they don't have to have a screen, either. Ha, except when you are OS X. Because you will need lots of Applesripts and cronjobs programmed in order to actually back-up files, shut down server, move corrupted files to trash, and move backed up files to the valid directory of where they will be served when the UNIX command line cron job re-opens server.
