replacing data in multiple records

Featured Replies

I have to replace (actually re-enter) the contents of one field for each record in a large file (47K records) with the contents of the same field (for each record from a duplicate file. I need to re-enter these data, I think, because this field is a match field for a lookup relationship...and no "lookingup" occurs until the data in that match field (for each friggin' record!) is re-entered. This seems assinine to me, but hopefully I'm just missing something else that ought to be obvious. I couldn't find any info on this in the Help feature or the manual.

Thanks, Pete

Relookup?

yup...relookup. thanks!

Lookups only occur when initial data is entered or that data is changed, which affects the looked up information. This is the desired behaviour for fields of this type. It is useful for when you want data to remain constant even if related data changes, e.g. invoice data remains constant when project data is updated, unless you force a relookup. If you want data to be refreshed automatically, then use a calculation field.

If Queue's comment wasn't what you were after, then perhaps you could be a bit more specific. I, for one, don't exactly understand what your situation is - if you just need to match fields, if you need to globally replace a field, what?

Just make sure the field to be relooked up is on the current layout when you perform the step.
