FM7.0; s l o w

Hello,

Does anyone else have experience with FM7/OSX with the new version being ssssoooooo slowwwwww?

I'm running a G4/400MHz/512MB with only FM7 on it, and the application has become so slow that it is a pain to work with. Small scripts that took 0.5 seconds (which I already found to be slow!) in FM6 now can take anywhere between 5 and 10 seconds (changing between files and layouts) in 7.0. It is really horrible. All relations are local, so no wildcards etc., only direct links to files in the same folder.

I'm used to PCs and run industrial programs on an outdated systems (P1, 64mb etc) that have about 100-200 scripts running at last twice per second. I don't see why Filemaker was so slow to begin with, as the scripts are really simple, but now 7.0 takes the cake...

Using FM now brings back memories of my Atari 800 (32kb version !!) and loading in cassette tapes with the dBase on it.

I have not experienced any speed problems (scripting or layout changes) on my converted solution. Have you checked your file references to make sure incorrect and outdated references are gone?

Mac OS 10.3.3, G4 450/256MB

Try to import 100.000 records and then tell me .....

fm 7 is 100 (real number) times slower than 6 or 5

Tried some imports of a back-end attendance table with 100,000 records into a clone:

FM6, No lookups - 7min, 24sec

FM7, No lookups - 17min, 30sec

FM6, 6 lookups - 11min, 45sec

FM7, 6 lookups - 32min, 52sec

G4/933, 384MB with factory ATA drive.

Hi George,

I don't have 100.000 records, oly between 600-700 small scripts spread out over 35-40 files. I don't have a lot of data, but I DO a lot with what I have.

Hi Jim...

Look at my note >>>>>> NOTE: this is in response to Ender

Hi George,

I'm not sure what your question is, but what I was showing was my import tests for FM6 vs FM7. My tests showed that FM7 was 2-3 times slower than FM6, but certainly not 100 times slower.

If you are experiencing speeds 100 times slower on FM7, then perhaps FM7 is more processor dependant. Maybe a faster processor yields significantly better results?

I would think memory is also involved here. Importing 100,00 records could take ages on a box with less memory than, say, one with a GB of RAM. I've noticed that imports slow down every few minutes. By the time 100K are done, I'd imagine it to be at a grueling crawl.

There was a thread.. (maybe on mac-in-touch?) noticing that the import was much slower if you had just deleted a bunch of records. Is that the case for you George, or are you creating new records?

YES!!! I notice the slowness - mostly in layout mode!! Talk about a drag (excuse the pun) when I "drag" items on my layout around i sometimes have to click and hold for a number of seconds for it to recognise that I have clicked it... and then wait for a while when i move it for the item to catch up with my mouse.
