FMP 4.1 + Classic (10.2 and up) + OS 9

Hi,

My company is having a lot of problems with FMP 4.1 and sharing databases via TCP-IP

Scenario that works.

- OS 9.1 user hosts dbase and Jaguar/panther users seem to be able to view and use dbase most of the time

Scenario that does not work

- OS X (.2 or .3) host dbase and 9.1 guests are unable to access the dbase.

Is there any way around this hosting issue with OS X (.2 or .3) and 9.1 users/

What solutions are there? Use FM server or perhaps upgrade all users to a newer version of FM (money is a problem)?

Thanks in advance...

Glyn

FMP 4.1 is not designed for OS X, even running in Classic Mode. While it should work as a guest, I am not surprised that it does not work as a host. I would suggest upgrading to at least Filemaker 5.5, you should be able to find used or aftermarket copies on eBay. This is a native OS 9/X application and should work fine in either OS and as host or guest.

Hi, Glyn!

So, FM4 hosted on OS X is okay for other OS X users, though, right? I just connected two 10.3 systems w/no problem but I did not have a 9.1 machine around w/FM4 for me to check. If you don't go to 5.5 as Kurt mentions, you might try uprading 9.1 to 9.2.2 and see if that helps as 9.2.2 is more X-compatible (and/or just upgrade to X for all your systems if they can run it; or replace the machines. I think I saw beige G3 towers/desktops for about $100-$150.
