M.A Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Hi, Is there an easier way to change the contents of a field with the same value for multiple records instead of going through each one of them individually or writing a script. Thanks
M.A Posted August 3, 2004 Author Posted August 3, 2004 Thanks a lot. That was so easy to replace the whole column. Thanks!
ronnie524 Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 what is the replace command (detail?)... sorry, a newb question maybe....
Lee Smith Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 A good place to find out about the different functions, the Replace Function being one, is by reading the FileMaker manual, you can get a great deal of information also by using the Online Help in FileMaker. For, examples of its use, you can do a search here at the Forum, and you will find numerous posts where it was used. You will also notice that the Substitute Function is often used with it. It is a very powerful way of manipulating your data, but it is nonreversible, so you need to practice on dummy files, and never use it on you original, unless you have a backup. HTH Lee
ronnie524 Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Thanks for the reply Lee, I did that, but it wasnt' quite what I was looking for my invoice database. Thanks for the lesson though. I should of done the search before I asked such a dumb question. . Ron
Lee Smith Posted August 3, 2004 Posted August 3, 2004 Hi Ron, There are no dumb questions, only those that are not asked. My point is that FileMaker has two great resources, and this Forum is a another one. Keep in mind though, it is easier to respond to a specific problem, then to answer a broad question such as: tell me about the Replace function. In other words, what don't you understand, or what are you trying to do with it. I should have mentioned the Find/Replace, Go to Menu, Edit, Find/Replace, that is new in Version 6 acts similar to that of a word processor (text editor). HTH Lee
ronnie524 Posted August 4, 2004 Posted August 4, 2004 Thanks again Lee, I've just downloaded a file from a link you have posted replying about some educational database (sorry, can't recall what it was about). I have to study the file tonight so... Maybe I'll have a question tomorrow or so . I really appreciate your help. Thank YOU . Ron
