BigMike Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 And I'm not just talking about FileMaker. I need to update a database that my WIFE uses for her business and if I can't get it done quickly OUR relationship may need some work!! I have posted a topic before and received some help, but I still can't get the silly joins to work correctly in my simple database. The primary issue I'm having is getting the related data from the parent tables to display in the child tables. It works for a couple of joins but the last one doesn't. I would be willing to pay someone an hourly fee to help me on this. It has been an issue for several months and my wife is running out of patience. I would like to be able to email the file to someone and discuss it over the phone, if possible. I am using v7 of FileMaker.
Fenton Posted August 25, 2005 Posted August 25, 2005 Related data from the parent table should show in the child files. Relationships between 2 stored fields are automatically 2-way in FileMaker 7. If the child data shows in the parent table, but the visa versa is not true, then the first suspect would be that the field in the parent table anchoring the relationship is unstored for some reason. Are you using a calculation field for the parent key? There really should be at least 1 straight ID to ID join, between two regular fields (text or number). There is also the possibility that the fields are correct, but that you're specifying a table occurrence of the parent base table that is not connected to the layout of the child file where you're trying to display the data; the old "you can't get there from here" problem. Check which table occurrence the child layout belongs to. A layout belongs to one (and only one) table occurrence. This is the anchor from where a relationship begins. It is quite possible, even likely, while building a file, that the main layout for a child table occurrence is NOT connected to the parent table. In that case you will need a 2nd table occurrence of the parent file, connected to the main child table occurrence; usually using the same keys. Let us know if you need more help, or post a zipped stripped-down version or a clone of your file. We don't really need to see any records to solve such a relational structure problem.
BigMike Posted August 31, 2005 Author Posted August 31, 2005 Thank you for your reply. I've attached a zip file that contains my database. It's quite simple and almost works. Everything works fine until you get to the Room Detail view. At that point the data from the joined tables fails to display. Any help you can give me would be grealty appreciated. Customer_Main.zip

BigMike Posted September 2, 2005 Author Posted September 2, 2005 Terrific! How do I contact you? You can email me at [email protected].
Lee Smith Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 Use "Start a Private Topic" (either of you can start one), it has the ability to pass files same as you do on the forum. Question to Bruce, why are you taking this off the Forum? Lee
bruceR Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 (edited) Because he says he's willing to pay for the work and that's what I'm trying to pursue. Thanks for mentioning start a private topic but I don't see any such choices, can you tell me where to look? Edited September 2, 2005 by Guest
Lee Smith Posted September 2, 2005 Posted September 2, 2005 It's and option you can get my clicking on the persons name in their post. It takes you to their profile, and then there is an option to Start a Private Topic. You can also do this by clicking on MY PROFILE and selecting Start a Private Topic, but you have to know the other members 'handle", so unless they are on your Buddy List, it is easier by clicking on the name.
