no1tmorrow Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 Little background. We are currently running filemaker 5 and I went into the office to update us to filemaker 7. Installed on Clients, Installed Filemaker Server 7, Upgraded Databases. Set a user in every database for each user on the system with no passwords just user names. I used the opener file on this forum to create a control panel (form with buttons on it to open the filemaker databases.) Here is the Problem: When I click the button (file opener form), I get an error that my password/username is incorrect. I click "OK" and it shows me my user name and it (Filemaker) puts three charachters in the password field. How did the three letters (I only see stars) get in the password field? What am I doing wrong. Thanks Thom
Wim Decorte Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 The file is on the server right? Did you check the FMS option to use External accounts and FM accounts? In that case FM will take your OS login name and send that to FMS.
no1tmorrow Posted October 23, 2005 Author Posted October 23, 2005 The files are hosted by FM Server 7. How do I enable this? Thanks in Advance Thom
Steven H. Blackwell Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 take a look at the excellent Tech Brief on FileMaker Server authored by Wim Decorte and found on the FMI website: http://www.filemaker.com/support/upgrade/techbriefs.html Steven
no1tmorrow Posted January 3, 2006 Author Posted January 3, 2006 I tried the external authentication with no luck (continues to prompt for username/password). Maybe I am explaining this wrong. Here is what I want to accomplish. Each database (20) will have all of the usernames in them in a group that will not allow layout changes. The usernames will also not have passwords (if i put passwords in them the owner will have a cow, I know not secure at all, I want to getting it running and as time goes on add new databases that will require passwords and then migrate everyone to passwords, screwed up company, I know.). Thus when I use the opener it pops up wrong username/password error. It will fill in my username correctly (Thom) and then it has 3 *** in my password field even though I did not enter a password yet. If I remove the three stars it will go right in. So is there a solution for this or is there a tech article for dummies? Maybe I am going about it all wrong. Thanks in Advance Thom
Steven H. Blackwell Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Check in File Options to seeif there is an auto-entered Account Name and password. Steven
no1tmorrow Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 So do I want Autoenter or not? If I put autoenter and 10 people are sharing it would they all be logged in the same? The reason why I ask is that in the long run I am hoping to add security to files and limit who sees what but for now I am trying to get off of version 5 with little to no changes in how people operate. The people I work with resist change.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 If you use Autoenter, it will log everyone on as the same. You can hold down the SHIFT or the OPTION key (specific by OS) to force a credentials dialog to appear. The purpose of that usually is to logon with a higher level of access that the level provided by autoenter. Steven
no1tmorrow Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 So do I need autoenter for there system or is this changed in the database? Thanks again
Wim Decorte Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 Only you can answer if you need it or not. If you don't want the users to be prompted for an account then you can use: - an auto-enter account. But everyone will be logged in with the same account. You will not be able to log who does what. - use External Authentication on an all-Windows setup. This requires you to set up External accounts in your FM files that match the domain groups the users belong to
no1tmorrow Posted January 6, 2006 Author Posted January 6, 2006 On the windows only setup. Is there a document on how to do that? Thanks again. You all are great.
