fishbone Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 If anyone happens to know, I am looking for a live connection (real-time) to a SQL database via FM. Can this be done? Pretty much every record that goes into FM also inserts into the SQL database. Vice Versa too. Every record that is inserted into the sql database through a different program automatically be entered into FM (real-time). I don't expect one person to know the answers to all of this, but if you know anything about the above mentioned, please leave your input as it is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Wim Decorte Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 No takers so far I see... Here's my take on it: a live connection is not possible in the sense that things will happen automatically. FM is not event driven. So in order to push data to the SQL data base or to receive data from the SQL database you need to run scripts. Lots of companies I've worked with do what you want to do and all of them use a "robot" machine. That's one machine with FMP installed on it that does nothing but look at the data in the FM files and initiates data transfers to the SQL database and runs data imports from the SQL database.
fishbone Posted November 16, 2005 Author Posted November 16, 2005 I see. So what your saying is it can be done, but is time consuming and costly. I am the one man operation working on this so it's probably out of the question. I wanted to be able to propose FM with the idea of keeping the old database as well (but also up-to-date with data). Aside from that though, can FM Server store filetypes of any kind? XLS, Word documents, zip files, etc..:)
PBHolt Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I just created a new topic based on the same question and came along this topic. Did you ever find a solution? I am still looking for something and was wondering if you came up with anything.
