Newbies jeffm Posted November 11, 2005 Newbies Posted November 11, 2005 Hi there, I was setting up a new database, and managed to make a field use a calculation which generates an infinite loop, and now I can't get to the file, it just hangs when I try to open. I can see the file if I set up a relationship from a dummy file, I can import information and scripts, but I can't get the file open. I tried Apple-Period, no help. Anything I can do? Thanks!
Raybaudi Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Hi make a relashionship with that file and a new one. Open the new and go to change the definition of the looping calc field !
Newbies jeffm Posted November 12, 2005 Author Newbies Posted November 12, 2005 I tried that, but it seems in FM 7 Pro (I put 8 in my profile but haven't upgraded yet oops -) the relationship works but the related file doesn't open so I don't have any access to it. Is there some way to force a related file to open? Thanks, Jeff
SlimJim Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 When you open a file with a relationship to the infinite loop file does it (infinite loop file) show up in the Show Window list? If not then try creating a layout based on a TO of your file and access the data. It usually (I think) shows up in the Show Window list maybe with a pair of () round the name. If you click it it should open - of course it may then go into its loop so make sure you use an "access" file specifically for this job.
Lee Smith Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 This should work in v7/8, but maybe you were not understanding the proceedure. Create a new file. Create a relationship in the new file to the old file. This will open the old file with out the startup loop (should) Next Go to the [color:blue] Menu >> Window next to "Help" and select the Old File there. This will bring the old file from "Hidden" to Open. Go into the [color:blue] Menu >> File Options and remove the opening startup script. HTH Lee Hi Jim, Didn't realize you were online, didn't mean to step on your toes. Lee
Raybaudi Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 Yes SlimJim and Lee have pointed you to the right direction ! BTW after the creation of the relationship you may open the related file by: Window-->Show Window-->(your related file) As you can look at it, go quicly to modify your looping calc !
Newbies jeffm Posted November 12, 2005 Author Newbies Posted November 12, 2005 No, I tried exactly that but it does NOT show up in the Window menu. I understand that it should, but it isn't. I made a layout, even put a field in that uses a pop up list with values from a field in the other, and then put in two fields from the problem file, and they fill in fine, but the file isn't listed in the Window menu anywhere. Jeff
Raybaudi Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 look carefully at the submenu "show window" !
Newbies jeffm Posted November 12, 2005 Author Newbies Posted November 12, 2005 OK, sorry, it used to be in the Window menu - problem is that when I try to open it from the Show Window menu it still hangs. Data is all there fine, I just can't get the file open... Thanks Danielle for pointing out that it is a submenu now, and your English is just fine -)
Raybaudi Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 problem is that when I try to open it from the Show Window menu it still hangs. try to continuosly press and release the ESC key ,while pointing the mouse over File menu ! BTW can you send us your file ?
Newbies jeffm Posted November 12, 2005 Author Newbies Posted November 12, 2005 The ESC didn't seem to help. Happy to send the file, but don't have email privileges here, so what can I do?
Raybaudi Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 this is my email: [email protected] If you want I can try to do something for you
Lee Smith Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 make it an attachment to a post Here Be sure that it is a .zip or .sit file. Lee
