Gerald Clare Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 In previous versions all open files would show up in the Window menu. And any file whose data was referenced by an open file would be opened. Now, with v8, it seems only my 'Master' file is shown, unless I open an ancillary file first. What the hell is up with that? Any notions? Thanks.
Razumovsky Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 Much better design and operations is what the Hell is going on with that! Seriously though, this is a new feature from FM7 up- files can reference data in related files without opening them. Think it through and you will see how much an improvement that is. No more painfully long startups, unneeded windows scattered across the desktop, no worrying if a user will accidently modify data through an unintended file... Note that all open files are still visible through the window menu, it is just that files dont pop open everytime you reference them. If you simply miss the cluttered clunkiness of -Raz
Ted S Posted March 8, 2006 Posted March 8, 2006 I guess I would disagree a bit with the notion that the related files are not actually opened. If you choose: Window > Show Window, you will see the related files that have been opened there. It's just that they are more hidden now; which I personally prefer.
Razumovsky Posted March 9, 2006 Posted March 9, 2006 Ted, Thanks for pointing that out, I never noticed it! -Raz
Gerald Clare Posted March 10, 2006 Author Posted March 10, 2006 (edited) No, all the referenced files are not visible in Window>Show Window. I've got several files open, been workin' on them all day and they're not to be seen in any Window Menu or submenu... And 'windows scattered across the desktop is not a problem since they're all maximized. But I've trained my users, some quite primitive to navigate by the window menu where I have not provided a button to go where they want... so this new 'Feature' really is sucking for me. Razumovsky Posted March 10, 2006 Posted March 10, 2006 Add a bunch of 'open file' steps to the startup script.
Gerald Clare Posted March 13, 2006 Author Posted March 13, 2006 Adding 'Open File' scripts does not do the job. The files are open but not shown in Window menu. What is displayed in Window menu seems random, but usually in my experience, just the first file opened.
Lee Smith Posted March 13, 2006 Posted March 13, 2006 Your files have three possibilities for your files. They are closed. They are open, and they show in the List under [color:green]Menu >> [color:blue]Window They are open as a Referenced File, and they are shown under [color:green]Menu >> [color:blue]Window >> [color:red]Show Window. If yours don't follow this, then you should attach your files, so we can see for ourselves what is going on. Lee
Gerald Clare Posted March 14, 2006 Author Posted March 14, 2006 Doh! It did work, putting an 'open file' script in my opening script and the files are appearing in my Window menu. Problem solved. But the scrolling issue remains...
Lee Smith Posted March 14, 2006 Posted March 14, 2006 But the scrolling issue remains... Huh, I don't see a reference to Scroll(ing) in this tread? Lee
Gerald Clare Posted March 14, 2006 Author Posted March 14, 2006 The scrolling issue refers to another post I put up, 'course now I realize that it's a rather obscure reference to an old post. My pique re scrolling is that the FM Developer (me) doesn't have complete control over whether the scroll wheel movement moves the page up and down or moves between records. I have one user who is absolutely batshit on the issue. She's on a page and wants to see the bottom of the layout and instead finds herself in a different record. The controlling factor seems to be if one is currently clicked into a field or not. Seems to me that it ought to be something one could check in the Layout Options dialogue... Gerald
