August 16, 200619 yr hi i've just bought fp 8.5 and 5 licences so we can share stuff around our new office. we have 20 or so small database files (fp5) and two larger ones (around 1.2 mb each). the small files have all converted without a hitch but the two larger ones open up after conversion with a dialog box asking for account and password details. i've tried entering my mac account login and password (didn't work obviously) and using Admin and no password didn't work either. the files open in fp6 with no password so why would fp8.5 want one? and how do i go about removing this restriction? many thanks in advance. max
August 16, 200619 yr use Admin as the user ID, and if you did have a password, you would use it as the password. Lee
August 16, 200619 yr You may have had a password on the files, but had them set to login automatically. If you can figure out your previous password, use that in the password field of the login dialog, leaving the account name blank.
August 16, 200619 yr The Account Name defaults to Admin, which I called user id, and I already stated the bit about the passwords. Lee
August 16, 200619 yr Author thanks for the replies. afaik there has never been a password on this file. and if i enter admin as the login i can't get in. i suspect i may have to export the files and start over.
August 16, 200619 yr Hey Lee, Glad to clarify: On converted solutions (with a password), the account name IS the old password, but can be left blank when logging in (so someone looking over your shoulder can't see what the password is). For new files or converted files that had no previous password, "Admin" is the default [Full Access] account name.
August 16, 200619 yr Okay, I was thinking with Max on this, that there never was a password. So thanks for clarifying that, as it still could be haunting Max. I seeing the the words converted file, and I'm wondering if the file became Read Only in this process somewhere? [color:red]Max, you might what to check the file at the Finder level, and Get Info. HTH Lee
August 17, 200619 yr Author thanks lee. i'd checked the finder permissions on the file and all was good. it's a mystery as to why i can't get this file to work. i can export the files as tab delimited and then create a new fp7 doc and import them all but it's a bit of a pain. if you think it might help (and if you have the time) i can post the file somewhere and let you have a look at it. many thanks max
August 17, 200619 yr It would be more useful to examine the FM6 version of the file, as that can tell us about any existing passwords and auto-logins.
August 17, 200619 yr Author i don't have as fm6 but i do have the original fm5 (ie xxx.fp5) version. any use? http://www.redfacilities.com/Master_DAT_Archive.fp5.zip
August 17, 200619 yr Well, that's a new one for me. It seems if you have a "(no password)" password in FM5/6, it converts it differently that if you don't actually have any passwords listed. I don't know what the "(no password)" equivelant is supposed to be in FM7/8. Anyway, you can always delete the "(no password)" password from your .fp5 file and convert it again.
August 17, 200619 yr Author the 'no password' thing is weird – you'd think it meant there er.. wasn't a password as opposed to the password being 'no password'. anyway that's fixed it. thank you SO much.
