June 5, 200124 yr I'm using Filemaker Pro Access Privileges. The Web Security Database is lame and doesn't work with what I need. Instant Web Publishing is enabled. I have all my groups and layouts and passwords set up. But, when the users click on the database, it never asks them for a password, so all my gorups and passes and layouts are useless! Do any of you guys have any idea about what I'm doing wrong?
June 5, 200124 yr RE: I'm using Filemaker Pro Access Privileges. The Web Security Database is lame and doesn't work with what I need. That is your conditions, and you set them by yourself. I will say, that Web Security Database is far from "lame". I never had any problem with it. Other Pros are using it.
June 5, 200124 yr Author Well, then I guess answer this one: I want to restrict fields in Web Sec Databasee to certain users. Ecah iwth different restrictions. In WSD, it seems like I can only restrict fields for only one group, or have all groups have the same field restrictions. If this would work, then I'd say WSD isn't really lame. Till then...
June 5, 200124 yr I never had any problems when I used the Web Security Database. From what I remeber I used to......... Make sure the names of the databases are correctly entered rembering the fp5 suffix if you've used it on the database name (yes i forgot once!). Make sure you have the correct actions ticked for each username and make sure you have "use web security database" not "use filemaker access privs" in access privs in the web companion configure dialog box. Make sure you remove or indeed don't enter an "all users" entry or at least remove the ticks from the actions (I forgot that once aswell ) if all these have been done you need to describe how you've configured your FMPro security in more detail NB some of the things I mentioned here wouldn't cause the error your getting but they are worth checking anyway

I would look to see if the Web Security Database option was selected in the Web Companion configuration box in filemaker. When you go to the web companion configuration box, you can tell it what security method you are using. Check to make sure that Filemaker access privileges are selected. I would start there first and then check the other stuff.
June 7, 200124 yr Sceurity *either* uses FMP passwords *or* Web Security Databases, *not* both. If you have a <no password> password in your database and are using FMP passowrds, the user won't be asked for a password unless the action exceeds the <no passowrd> privileges. I bet that's the problem. If you want to use Web Security Databases, you have to configure Web Companion to use them and that means turning off the built-in passwords. If you do use Web Security databases, you'll have to add records for all the web-shared databases, and add usernames and passwords for each user (or create "all users" records, but that defeats the purpose). The built-in database passwords no longer work, and neither will the groups and other built-in security features, because you've turned them off and elected to use the Web Security databases. There is an advantage to using Web Security databases for security: you can track users by individual username and password if you are doing custom web publishing. FMP's built-in security only authenticates on the password and ignors the username fied completely.

Thi shas been my main problem for the last 2 weeks and ya just solved it. Thanks much Matt
June 8, 200124 yr I'm genuinely surprised Scratch and Anatoli didn't pick that one up! Oh well, we all miss the obvious sometimes.

Boy, I missed so many things in my life :-) But from: "I'm using Filemaker Pro Access Privileges. The Web Security Database is lame and doesn't work with what I need" I've grasped that Web Security is not in use.
June 9, 200124 yr oooops lol! glad you got it sorted DrugBust! That's the advantage of this forum........getting loads of people to look at a problem one of us will pick up the threads!
August 3, 200124 yr Wow. Finally reading a barely-related post helped me solve a problem. A previous post in this topic said that if you have a <no password> in your access privileges, you would not get a pw dialog box UNLESS you asked to perform a higher task. In my case, I have students being authenticated through the university LDAP system, passing their ID number into a -search URL. Obviously, it would be redundant to then have another dialog box come up for them. However, staff and administrators are not using the LDAP system, but need pw protection for their searches. So, I just changed -find to -new, even though they're not adding new records, and took "Add new records" off the <no password> privileges, since the kids will never add themselves to the db (they're obviously in it already). Finally found a workaround. Yippee. bevin
