excluding one field when duplicating a record.

Featured Replies

HI all,

I have a slight problem and I am not sure how to solve it.

I have a table that uses an auto entered serial number in the id field. Sometimes it would save a lot of typing if I just duplicated a record and made changes in one or two fields rather then creating a new recored and typing in all 10 fields. Of course the problem with duplicating a recored is that the serial number gets duplicated and is no longer unique.

Basically I would like to duplicate most of the contents of a recored, and have a new serial number auto entered -- Is this possible?

Thanks in advance.

If its a FM auto entered serial ID, upon duplicating the record, it should duplicate all the data except for the SerialID which will take the next available number.

The same is true for Creation and Modification Auto-Enters. So a duplicated record will still receive it's own proper creation/modification. FM is nice. :wink2:

This is NOT true if you are using a calculation which concatenates text with the auto-enter serial, for instance. But FM generated does indeed protect from duplication.

Thanks. It looks like my eyesight was to blame -- when I looked between the original and the duplicated recored I could not tell the difference between 0048 and 0049. Time to switch to a larger font. Sigh, it is a bummer getting old -- but it sure beats the alternative :

Morning.... go to

Edit | Preferences | 4th check box down | and check the dreaded "I'm getting older and my eyesight is going" box..... I had to go there last year....aaarrrrgggggggg......

Of course this takes away real estate, and doesn't allow you to zoom in past 200% (because every zoom level is now doubled up to max of 200, i.e. 100 now = 200, 150 = 300 and 200 = 400) but it does wonders for the eyes....of course you will now have to buy a larger monitor...... but we've been wanting one anyway... or you could just write all your "file setup on opening" scripts to include...

If(Get(UserName) = "My Name";

Set Zoom Level (200%)

End If

And it will automatically zoom in only if it's you...or set two scripts to work as zoom in and zoom out (with adjusting the window to fit after the zoom to make it nice and neat) and tie to an Option (or control) key 1-9....or get glasses for working only on the computer...

Although this list is funny....I confesss... I've done all of them!! Sometimes I too, have made an error because I didn't see the element correctly! What a waste of time...and since I hate wasting time (that is, adding no value in the time frame, unless that is my goal...) more than pride, I submit this early morning soliloquy...

Best regards,

Royce

Hey Valdrin, not to discount the sage advice from Royce, but you might also try Edit > Preferences > Fonts and activate the Brail font. Be sure to also check 'Use Field Locking' or it will begin to look like Dominoes. It works very well for ME on Windows with FM 8.0v3. I have not tested it with 8.5 but I've heard that FM has improved the 3D effects, coming in line with Vista. Brail font isn't needed on my Mac because it transfers the images telepathically.

UPDATE: I read that as "or get glasses (for) the computer..." and the funniest image came to mind. It may be time to re-work my avatar. :cofeebrake:
