I have a question about setting up web companion in FM 5.5. I have a number of files published on the web via custom CDML. I've had the FileMaker Sharing Option set to "Multi-user" and everything is working just fine. But I'm wondering, can I set it to "Single user"? If yes, which one is preferable, "Multi-user" or "Single user"?

It should be on Single user or if you need to share something for another FM users, then Multi-hidden.

If you do not have some kind of special security protection, then all records are visible through browser anyway

I set the files that contain data to be viewed through HTML/CDML to "single user", but (and I didn't try it extensively) it didn't work. I would think it should. I must be missing something here.

Logic applies....

As TCP/IP is the vehicle of the internet then you must allow sharing via TCP/IP - hence the files will be shared, so they are multi-user.

Hidden will only hide them from FMP Clients. If you want to hide a web enambled db then you must add an underscore ("_") to the file name prior to the .fp5.

All this is in section 14 of the FMP 5 manual.

Does any one read manuals any more ?

Mark, thank you. And I do read manuals, all the time. But I don't always remember everything I read. Comes with age.

Search for security loophole, which addresses that. The hole is larger than Grand Canyon!

We developed solution for WNT/W2K platform and it will be feasible to custom develop that for MacX.

For standard Mac OS there is protection available via WebSentry? Am I right?

MultiUser and MultiUser Hidden have nothing to do at all with files hosted for access by web browsers via the Web Companion. A single user file can be hosted for access by browsers. In fact, in most every instance, for security reasons these files should be set to single user.

The underscore _ is a vestiage of FMP3 and FMP 4 days, although FileMaker Pro 5 is clever enough to convert a FMP 4 file with an underscore in its name to MUHidden.

I encourage a reading of the Web Security Best Practices White paper on the FMI web site.

Old Advance Man

Thank you, Anatoli and Old Advance Man. I suspected that the single user/multi user setting options didn't have anything to do with settings for files hosted for access by web browsers using Web Companion. But I haven't found clear writing on this.

OAM: pardon my dumb question, but the "FMI website", is that the main FileMaker website? I found a paper there, "Securing Your Data in FileMaker Web Publishing", I haven't read it carefully, just scanned it now, but it doesn't seem to mention the single/multi settings. I guess that's because they don't apply. But I'm rambling.
