ken_s2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 I have five FM files on FMS7. One is an opener file so to speak (it is on the server, not on clients) with checkboxes for each of the other four. The opener file sets a global field based on the user's login name. After selecting which of the other four files a user wants to open, s/he clicks "OK" and those files open. The login name is then used in all the other, newly opened files, for entry in certain fields. To ensure that the login name is used in each of the other four databases, I want to circumvent the user from opening these files directly (Open Remote and Open Recent). I realize I could consolidate all the files into one, and there may be a way to have the login info entered in each of the four databases, but without regards to these other options: Is it possible, under this server-based scenario, to disallow a user from opening a file directly, and only allow it to be opened by another file? (The user must still obviously have credentials to the file, otherwise the "Display only the databases the user is authorized to access." would work). Ken
mr_vodka Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Why not just hide the other files from displaying in the 'Open Remote File' dialog via the file sharing preferences?
ken_s2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Perhaps just due to ignorance of that method. Do I have to take the files offline first, and open them in FMP? I'm not seeing that option while the files are being served. Thanks! Ken
mr_vodka Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Definately stop serving the files first. Its under the same area as where you already selected sharing to be turned on for the files.
ken_s2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 Thanks, I stopped serving the files, but am having difficulty copying from the server to my client (I don't have FMP on the server) via Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 (on both the server and the app on my system). I've done this successfully many times before. Not sure if the network I'm on (comcast) is blocking the protocol ARD uses for file xfer or not (comcast does block smb traffic here). I'll try on the same subnet tomorrow. Ken
ken_s2007 Posted March 7, 2007 Author Posted March 7, 2007 That worked great, thanks John! (Side note: I moved the files via ARD on the same subnet, no problem. Not that copying files between remote and client in ARD doesn't work across subnets, just that it wasn't working on the machine I was running it on last night. Not sure if that was due to some configuration, or filtering. The basic control of the remote machine worked fine; perhaps the file xfer protocol of ARD is on a different port, I don't know yet). Ken
