Serial number field changes to reflect new year

Hi,

I was wondering if this is possible:

I have a field for a case number. I want to start the number off with the year and then an incremental number following it.

I want to make the case number prefix (the current year) change with each New Year.

Example (for 2007)

2007-0001 then the next record would be 2007-0002 etc.

Then when the new calendar year starts...the number would change to 2008-0003…

2008-0004 etc.

Or I could even live with the new year starting over at 200?-0001

I currently have the field set to Auto Enter a serial number incremental by one

(2007-0001) but of course that will keep the 2007 plus the increments even when the new year rolls around.

I have tried several calculations but just cant get anything to work.

Thanks for any guidance,

James

Hi James,

Good to see you back. Keep the current SerialID just as 0001, 0002, 0003, etc. Then create a calc field with Year ( Get ( CurrentDate ) ) & "-" & SerialID.

Mr. V

I never went very far…I have been reading and watching the board just learning as much as I can. Things are going much smoother than our last meeting ;)

Again, thanks for the help I guess one day I'll have to buy you a drink.

The B-I-G problem with this is that users with incorrect system clocks will produce incorrect serial numbers.

My suggestion is to put the prefix in the SerialID, but script the process of allowing users to set the next ID number (there is a script step just for doing this).

This should be done to a second field though and not the main serialID field. Allowing the users to use the Set Next Serial Value script step on the primary serial ID would be asking for trouble.
