Is is possible to sequentially number Subsummary parts on a report layout?

Can't figure this out; inserting record number symbol doesn't work, because I need the numbers to re-start sequentially after every subsummary break. You'd think this would be a built-in feature? Is it not? I have a feeling that this one's right under my nose, lol...

Thx!

Hi!

Thanks for the feedback, I'm acquainted with Mr. Osborne's excellent post, and I'm afraid it's not what I'm looking for...

I'm looking to number each subsummary heading, not the body parts beneath it :) )

I've tried Mr. Osborne's solution as to what I'm trying to do; if the tweak required to use his solution to achieve my somewhat different goal is obvious, it's over my head, lol...

If you look at the diagram on the link you sent me, what I'm trying to number are the phrases 'Filemaker Pro' and 'Filemaker Pro Advanced,' as 1 and 2 respectively, and so forth...

Hi Vodka/Comment :) )

I tried both of your suggestions even before I posted; neither seem to do what I'm trying to do. I'm sure the above example of my report will make it all clear, and I bet you two will have an answer, somehow : )

The report example shown reflects the implimentation of Vodka's suggested "Country" solution. As you can see, each subsummary heading (which, in this solution, represents a contract) ends up with a number "1" rather than the serialized numbers I'm looking for. And I need the serialization to reset after each occurrence of the "Agreement Class" heading which, in this example, is "GENERAL" for all the particular records shown.

Both Comment's and Mr. Osborne's suggestion return the same repeating "1" value, as well : (

The sort order is accurate: from top to bottom. Any ideas?

I tried both, before I posted, including the "running total solution."

Those solutions are all aimed at achieving different goals. None seem to address the goal of numbering the leading subsummary headings. It seems that something so useful would be an integrated feature, something along the lines of "insert record symbol." The report I have to generate will never be less than 75 pages long; the document isn't easily navigable without the leading subsummary numbers...

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

The solution I have referred to in my first post here, the one posted by -Queue-, will do what you want.

To avoid confusion with other solutions (which are indeed aimed at other goals), I will restate it here:

1. Define a summary field sCountCategory as 'Count of' your Category field

2. Define a calculation field (result is Number) =

1 / GetSummary ( sCountCategory ; Category )

3. Define a summary field as running total of the calculation field. Put this running total in your sub-summary by Category part.

Include the Category field in your sort order.

Thx, Comment. I tried that one, and also re-tried it as recently posted. Same result, I'm afraid; I get "1" for each leading sub-summary. I've uploaded the solution, if you'd care to take a peek. I'm curious as to what I'm doing wrong, and figured this would be the easiest way?

The three fields are in the Agreements table; they're named after you: Comment_Calc; Comment_Count; and Comment_Runningtotal...

Your generosity and kindness is much appreciated :) )

1. The fields need to be defined in the same table as the table used for the report - in your case, that would be Agreement_Actions.

2. GetSummary() cannot use a related field as the breakField, so I changed you breakField to use the 'local' AgreementID field for both the sub-summary part and the sort.

3. The final field should be a running TOTAL, not running count. And the field to total is the calculation field (Comment_Calc), NOT the Agreement_ID field again.

Wow. Your kung-fu is impeccable, my friend; I bow down :) )

I hope to increase my understanding of FMP's new structure so that I can extend to others the kindness you've extended to me; thanks much!

Is there any way to make the numbers restart after each group? That would be the last detail...

I can't play with it right now, but I would expect that if you define the first field in the chain (the summary count) to restart for each master group, the rest will follow.

I tried it; it returns an 8 character decimal after the first record...

I'll play with it also, though it's likely you'll beat me to it :) )

Thx!
