Hi.

This is probably simple, but I cant nut it out.

I have two layouts, each attached to a different table. Table 1 is client info - eg name, birthdate, other_details, and table 2 is an episode form based on these clients - some fields which are the same - i.e. name, birthdate etc.

I want to be able to copy the contents of several of these fields across from the clients table to the episode form in one go. I can copy/paste one field, but need to bring a handful (of field data) across in a single script.

How do I do this please?

YOu can you a lookup but you can also just have the two tables related and then put the related fields from table 1 on the second layout.

Hi.

The tbales are related, yes, so youre saying having the fields from the related table on the second (destination) layout and then just copying data from one field to another? Like having these fields named as objects then copying, moving to specific object, then pasting?

I'm not sure what you mean.

I dont just want to display the data, I actually need to copy it to the different table.

Sorry if I'm being thick.

If you need to copy the data, then you can use lookups as I said earlier. Otherwise you would have to use a bunch of set fields to set the related field with the data.

BTW, what is the purpose of copying all this data? Having lots of duplicate data between tables, goes against the concept of a relational database.

Hi John,

Thanks for your response.

I will delve back into lookups and see if I can get it going. I did have trouble with the lookups, saying that it was looking for a lookup table. Should I have a lookup table setup that points back to the original demographic table? Let me play with this - I hope I dont need to come abck and bother you with this apparently easy problem.

The reason that data is copied into the second table is due to the fact that demographic data changes in each episode that the individual presents, and stats need to be run on the episodal data independently of the demographic data. I agree that it's inefficient in that sense, but due to the occasioanl independence, we need certain dat in the episodal table to do statistics on.

Thanks again.

Hi John.

I mave managed to get the lookup stuff sorted out - thanks for the tip. It made sense once I got my head around it.

Cheers,

Greg
