hi,

What is the best way to do a calculation to figure the sales tax based on 2 value lists, one for the type of project, residential or commerical and one if it is new construction or renovation.

Maybe better explained, if the project is a residential, then only the materials are taxable and not the labor whether or not it is new construction or renovation. If the project is commerical and is a new project then it is taxed the same as a residential project, materials only. If it is a commerical project but is an existing building but there is renovation being done, then everything is taxable. Materials and labor.

The sales tax is also based on what town or county the work is being completed. The rates change by location.

So, if it is a new residential or commerical project in one town or county, then it is taxed at a certain rate on materials only. If it is a existing commerical project in the same town or county, it is taxed on everything.

I have value lists set up to look up the location and rate and for what type of project it is. What I want to do is by what values are selected in these two lists, a calculation will be performed on either materials (plants & hardgoods) or materials and labor and at the desired tax %.

Any insight would be appreciated.

You said in one sentence what I said in 5 paragraphs! Sorry if I over explained.

Yes, materials always taxable, labor only taxable on commerical renovation. Rates and locations vary.

One other thing I forgot to mention is there are times when everything is non taxable.

I think the best way for you to do this would be a "calculate tax" script that would step through your line items and determine if it is a taxable item or not. In my sales database I use a "Certified Reseller" field and if that field is set to "Yes" then they are tax exempt. It has worked so far.
