I have a solution running on server 8 that has an a startup script that takes me to a layout with no fields on it (a splash screen) then it performs a find and then jumps to another layout on the same table. Sometimes though, when I open the solution, the first screen displayed is a layout from another table that has a summary field on it and the users have to wait while FM does the summarization, then it performs the opening script. The two tables are related to each other. Why is it jumping to this table and layout first before the opening script is run?

For the moment with only a couple of thousand records it is not that annoying, but later when there are hundreds of thousands of records it will become quite painful waiting for FM to complete this summarization. I just want mention that this does not happen all the time.

I thank you in advance for any answers you might have.

because the last screen that was viewed before it was hosted was probably not the same screen your script is using, I'd recommend opening the file in local user mode and switch to the layout you desire before hosting the file again.

Even though you have a script going to another layout filemaker remembers the last layout you used when you quit the file, as single user. In your case its trying to evaluate the layout and it's contents - summarization's prior to the script launching.

I tried your suggestion and it did not work. I closed the file on the server and opened it (single user) and switched to the splash screen layout. Then I closed the file and then opened it on the server again. To my dismay, when I open the file running on the server it still opens on this other layout occasionally. This is extremely frustrating. This behavior only happens when running on the server. I originally posted this under the "SERVER" topic and it was moved to here. This is a server related issue and not a scripting issue. I wish they would move this back.

try this

as single user - create a new table "splash" no fields no relationships, then set it as the default layout - document preferences also, add this layout as a target in your startup script.

then put on server and report your findings...
