dulux Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Hi all, I have four databases that I need to share with 3 users on a local intranet. I do not want to use web publishing as it is messing up my layouts. If I buy a filemaker server licence, do I also need to buy individual licences for each client or are they included in the price? I thought about just hosting the database files on the file server and buying clients but will there then be connection problems? Your advice is appreciated. Kind Regards Rich
Steven H. Blackwell Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 I thought about just hosting the database files on the file server and buying clients but will there then be connection problems? Bad idea. This will likely toast your files. FileMaker Server does not come with client licenses. However, thre are various packages that FMI offers with client seats and server combined. So check with your sales rep. Steven
dulux Posted September 15, 2008 Author Posted September 15, 2008 Thanks. I spoke with FM sales and they recommend just adding a client and using it to host the files for the other users. Seems like a practical and cost effective approach..... Thanks Rich
mr_vodka Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Just keep in mind the disadvantages of running peer to peer. You can search the forums to find many posts about peer to peer verse getting server. My personal recommendation is to get a package with server and clients.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted September 15, 2008 Posted September 15, 2008 Well, it's not such a good idea as you will likely discover. Peer to peer is not serious. But if you electto doit, be sure to use a dedicated machine and not someone's workstation to do the hosting. Steven
dulux Posted September 17, 2008 Author Posted September 17, 2008 Thanks guys. I know that peer to peer is not the ideal solution but it's a money issue. Filemaker is not the most cost effective solution for a small business like ours - all the best deals are for 10 seats or more apparently. I shall just have to instigate a robust backup procedure... Thanks for your advice Rich
