Hello... I have no idea where this fit in the discussion groups, so perhaps I'm posting in the wrong place.

I have a field that has 8 as storage. I want to auto-enter in the 8th storage place, but in the auto-enter options, I can't specify field[n], so it constantly enters in the first storage place.

any ideas as to how to do this?

thanks!

I would suggest that you stop using repeating fields while it is still early in your design. It will alleviate hours of redesign down the road.

ok, what should I be using instead?

The only way I know for now is lets say I have a list of items that I want the user to select, I only create one field "itemNames" which has a repeating field of 8. There must be something else that can give me the same results?

PS - It's not the first time I see advanced users telling newbies to stop using repeating fields... but what do we replace that with?

thanks!

The same thing that FileMaker has been using for this purpose for the last 15 years and is visible in almost every FileMaker file you will ever look at: portals and related records.

Search for "portal" in the tutorial file that comes with your copy of Filemaker. The link to the tutorial file is right there in your help menu. Do all the exercises in the tutorial.
