I hope this question is in the correct section, please move if not.

Is there a way to have a script to Open a file and then using the 'When opening this file perform script' so i can do some stuff, by use of a PC Clock/Date?

Say the file will open at 12:00am on the 1st day of each new month.

Can this be done, or do i need to use windows Scheduled tasks etc

Of course it could be done but is it a healthy solution? ... the normalised solution would instead subscribe to this:

...what should the argument be for not having identical attributes in the one and same table? Searches are directed on indexes, so abbreviation of those would have no significant benefit.

The real problem arises when you would do any kind of statistics on one files data vs the other. Say it's an enrollment system in a school, where Old pupils could be supposed to be deselected by the termination of their studies, but you then suddenly needs data regarding timely payments or rather lack of when a brother or sister is enrolled later - what kind of patience are to be expected?

I can't really say what your motive is for this? Could it be that you havn't found a need to buy fm-server, with scheduled backups and rollbacks if required ...or you not yet have considered a field could be responsible for classification of your data:

It is with the utmost hessitation I lead you to a solution to your problem, since we before have encountered you barking up the wrong tree - relational speaking in this thread:

I thought Comment dissuaded you from pursuing the approach? This is how you could - but shouldn't do it either!!!!

Hmm,

I ask a question about opening a file at a designated time/day of each month, and you refer to a post of mine back in 2006 that was to do with relationships, sorry either i am not not able to see through your murkey water reply, or the only common item is my username between such posts.

Perhaps say i should ask nothing next time!

Perhaps say i should ask nothing next time!

Well my goodness. Following your sentence style, "Perhaps say we should answer nothing next time??"

Either take what someone offers or don't! People are taking their (precious) time to respond. A simple, "nah, this isn't the same thing" and a bit of explanation would work much better than snapping which is guaranteed to result is less help in the future from ANYONE who might not feel like getting bit. Don't you think? :qwery:

Okay, if I understand you correctly then, I can join the group who should never assist you because I have the nerve to disagree with your attitude? I just want to have it very clear between us exactly what your latest response means because it is not setting well right now.

Both this thread and the old one are exhibiting flawed relational approaches. I seems like metaphors from other tools a disturbing your reasoning in both threads despite how spaced in time they actually are?

What would be the benefit of exchanging files instead of having everything in one single? Why do you ask without stating anything about context and purpose? Why do you reserve abstractions to your questioning only - when it should be opposite?

There is absolutely no relationship of this post to the 2006 posted one, as that file did not even get completed, but was achieved through Excel instead.

So i still scratch my head in amazement how one post can get unrelated responses.

It would be like going to a Bakery to buy paint, they just don't relate to each other.

My aim was to run a script that is in a file that finds expiry dates and put them into a pdf report.

I created a 'launcher' file to when opening run the script in the report file.

All is good, except to create the pdf report and email it, the user must manually open the file on the 1st day of each month to have the pdf emailed.

At present i have Windows Scheduled tasks setup to open the launcher file and email the pdf on a the set day.

I would have much rather the running of it stand alone without relying on other software to open the file.

More variations of software = more possibility of something stuffing up.

I think filemaker maybe cannot open a file or run a script while the file is not opened.

It's pretty easy, just leave out context and purpose from the description ... and everyone starts guessing.

My aim was to run a script that is in a file that finds expiry dates and put them into a pdf report.

This isn't an argument for scattering indentical fields out in several files ... if all coherent data is in the same set of tables within the same file, would you still be able to build request covering a whole series of criterias.

that file did not even get completed, but was achieved through Excel instead

As if I hadn't guessed that, hence my talk about inconvenient transfer of metaphors - does the expression "Horses for courses" mean anything to you?

Isn't there, aren't you still regarding this tool as a spreadsheet - for crying it out loud only Ryan Rosenberg seems to believe it is, and continue endorsing it this way to migrators:

Where do your question actullay dissent from the approaches debated here?
