Custom Ordering for Conditional Value Lists

Featured Replies

Is there a way to control the ordering of a conditional value list?

I'm trying to develop a task list for my cabinetshop.

If you choose "DOORS" as your first selection, then the second list of values is germane to door making activity.

The second list shows up in alphabetical order but I would rather have it show up in sequential order (i.e. step 1, step 2, step 3 etc)

[color:red]Is there a way to establish a custom ordering of the conditional values?

Thanks for any help,

Jarvis

I have another question about conditional value lists.

Is there a way to constrain the conditional value list to values from a FOUND set.

I would like, for example, to select "Doors" as a project then constrain the task list to activities that remain to be accomplished.

If, for example, the cut out is already done then I don't want that to be a selectable option. If, however, this step is not complete then I would like it to still be on the list.

Is there any way to constrain the second list based on additional criteria?

A value list doesn't "know" it's conditional. If it's defined to show values from a field (as opposed to custom values), then it will be sorted by that field - or by the 'also show' field defined in the value list. And the latter option provides an opportunity for a workaround:

I'm guessing the work around might be numbering the second field according to work sequence and sorting by work sequence?

There is no need to guess - it's explained in the thread I linked to.

I can't picture the scenario for this. I see a Project layout where a user picks a project type "Doors". Then a portal of tasks appears below specific to a project of this type. Each portal row has a date complete field (among others). The user simply fills out the portal for this project.

Can you expand on the interface and business flow that you require and explain how it differs from what I've described above?

Hi bcooney,

So far I haven't involved any portals, just value lists.

I'm trying to winnow the list of activities down to manageable size, (based on activities germane to specific products we build)

What I would like to have happen [in the background] is for this list to be further filtered by status of completion and skill level required to do the task.

Assume you are certified to work on Skill level 3 tasks:

What I would like you to see when you access the database is a value list of remaining activities for which you are certified.

I would like this filtered list to also show up in proper sequence (according to production flow).

Hence the need for Found Sets & Ordinal Position of sequence.

Does this make sense?

My eyes glossed right over that link.

I was focusing instead on what you meant by "work around".

I did study the link and it did tell me what to do.

I'm using a concatenation of a serial number & task description to keep every thing in proper sequence.
