I am looking at installing another FM server (5.5). Before i do i would like to know which platform runs FM server the best - Win NT or MAC OSX??

Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Right now it is the NT.

But MacX and Linux will be strong contenders soon.

Server 5.5 for Mac OS X / Linux doesn't come out until the 30th (this month), so you may want to wait and see what the response is if you can.

Just by the sheer power of a Dual 800Mhz G4 setup running OS X, I'm guessing that the Mac may be the strongest option out there. (Apple being the parent company of FMI can't hurt either)

** an 867Mhz single processor G4 will outperform a 1.7Ghz P4 at Video rendering/Photoshop tasks, so it would stand to reason that DB serving would also benefit from the G4 power.

Take a look at this for more info: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwny01/

(the G4 vs. P4 is a little over 1/2 way through)

The 'myth' clip was very interesting, however it does not mention FM at all. Take the information with a grain of salt since all the tests are run on Photoshop.

The G4 may well be faster for FM Server, however you will never figure that out by running Photoshop!

Our tests indicate that FM Server runs faster on an NT box (NT4.0SP6 running on a Compaq 200mhz Pentium Pro vs Macintosh 333mhz G3 beige OS 8.6.1). Response on average was about 10-30% faster on NT. Our theory is that FM Servers runs in the GUI environment on a Mac where FMS runs as a service on top of Windows (O/S service) on NT that is not affected by the Windows environment. Maybe OS X and FMS 5.5 might change things. Right now, FileMaker does not take advantage of multi-processor systems, on either platform - no advantage there.

Yes and no. In NT you can assign 1 processor to 1 application and the rest is on 2 processor.

It will probably help only Unlimited or FM client, because the server is running as service.

No, but from what I hear OS X takes advantage of MP systems, and passes that advantage on to other Apps.

OS 9, or OS X ? These systems, espically as used for server platforms are so different one must be very careful when referring simply to "Mac OS"
