Newbies bennygsrfm Posted October 12, 2009 Newbies Posted October 12, 2009 Hi, I have a database for my medical type clinic, where up until recently I used it on one computer, and just backed up the file on another computer. However now, I have 2 computers running filemaker 8. They are run with internet connections from 2 seperate locations and when the computers are on will require access to the same database sometimes at the same time. I am currently unable to do this as I don't know how to set it up. Both computer locations are run on local networks that I don't run, therefore don't have access to the network settings (even if I knew how) to set up a fixed IP address on both. How do I best connect the 2 computers to the database at the same time. I struggle with internet protocols and set-ups so will not having the fixed IP's make this difficult? My other thought was that I can buy a separate copy of FM and run it CONSTANTLY from home, then connect in to that from my 2 mobile locations? Thus my question: Do I need server to do this? Or is the client version adequate? If anyone can tell me how to set this up relatively cheaply I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Ocean West Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Welcome to the forums. I would recommend that for your solution you may consider a hosting provider and run the database over WAN. http://thedroolingdog.com http://www.worldcloud.com http://www.pointinspace.com http://www.888.net/
Newbies bennygsrfm Posted October 13, 2009 Author Newbies Posted October 13, 2009 Thanks for that. I have an Apple Mobile Me account? Can I do a similar thing to the FM hosting on that? I guess its just that if I need 2-4 computers to log on, the $40 odd (more in Aussie dollars) a month will in a short time mean it could be worth buying?
Genx Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 To answer your question the client version is adequate - you can share files via it. Your only issue is going to be Bandwidth - FileMaker loves bandwidth, the smaller your pipe, the slower the connection (not in a rational sort of way - it will eat up whatever you give it and only generally show small incremental improvements) - not as much of an issue with share hosting. + Power Bill every month / Resource use on your PC.
Ocean West Posted October 13, 2009 Posted October 13, 2009 No you cannot use MobileMe for hosting databases.
