Trouble Viewing IWS Database

Featured Replies

  • Newbies

I know this seems like a very basic question, but I've searched and searched and read and reread and can't figure it out.

I created a database that I need to make available to view and edit by 1 other individual.

I changed all of the sharing settings to make the particular database available. I'm provided with a url to be able to view the database. When I go to the url on all of my home computers (mac and pc), it works fine, but the individual I'm trying to get to access the database cannot view it. I confirmed browser compatibility, etc.

Has anyone experienced this before or have any ideas as to what might be the problem.

Thanks

There area several issues here.

1. Is your router configured to permit remote access

2. Do you have the firewall enabled on the hosting computer

3. The URL you use will not be the same for your friend as the IP Address will be different

If you understand the above then you'll know what to do, if not then we need more details.

Thanks for the quick response.

I have an airport extreme wireless router with WPA/WPA2 Personal security. I have remotely accessed my imac from my macbook before.

I don't think it's a firewall issue with my imac (where the database is stored) since I can access it from my wife's pc.

What url would he type to access the database?

My apologies for my ignorance here. The whole network side of computers aren't my cup of tea. Any thoughts or any other information that could possibly help?

Thanks

For IWP?

Either way it proves you can reach into your network from the outside world.

A typical URL might be

http://192.168.0.2:591/fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html

However your home IP address would be different to the IP range you find INSIDE your home.

192.168.0.2:591 needs to be substituted with your home IP address - also known as your PUBLIC address.

You may not need the :591 part.

Again I thank you for taking the time to respond.

I used whatsmyip.org to find the ip of the computer hosting the database.

I've done everything in the sharing setting to make it accessible. I can view the database from the 5 number url it tells me in the sharing settings of filemaker.

I've tried the link http:///fmi/iwp/res/iwp_home.html

No luck. The default port in the sharing preferences is 80 and I've read that I don't need to include that in the url. I've tried it both with and without the :80 after the ip address.

Any other possible thoughts?

Thanks

......and I thought learning to build the database would be the hard part with sharing being easy to setup!

ok, so I think the issue may have to do with port 80 being closed. how do you open a port? I've added it to port mapping in my airport extreme router with no luck.

what about connecting through 591? how is that done?

Port 80 or port 591 it doesn't really matter, unless you have a web server running on the hosting machine, in which case port 80 is not an option for IWP.

Sorry I can't be specific about configuring the Airport Extreme as I don't have one, and just about every router has a different configuration method.

Were you accessing from an EXTERNAL point?
