Cabinetman Posted December 28, 2009 Posted December 28, 2009 OK... so I bought FMP 10 Advanced from a guy and also got FM Server 10 Advanced in the deal. No books (I didn't need them anyway) or boxes but unregistered and good... I already am using the FMP 10 Adv. which is what I was after. Anyway... I don't see where I have a need for the Server version myself because I don't run off a server. I just have my database on my single bus. pc. Questions: Is there anything that a small guy would use this for? What kind of value is there in reselling it? I see on FM's site it goes for $3000 Full (not upgrade) which is what is what I have. Thanks guys... been away for a while.
Wim Decorte Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 If your own network is stable you can use FMS to host your development files and take advantage of FMS's live backups. You can have your work backed up every 15/30 minutes that way. Don't do this if your network isn't stable though because developing on hosted files with flaky networks can cause corruption. Second advantage is that if you need to develop server-side scripting routines (FM, OS or script sequences) then you can try them out in your office first.
Cabinetman Posted December 29, 2009 Author Posted December 29, 2009 Thanks but I don't have a network at all...... at least at the moment. At the moment I'm thinking I'm better off selling this than using it.
Steven H. Blackwell Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I have to say that this entire thing sounds suspicious to me and that someone may have pulled a fast one on you. If "a guy" sold this to you, are you sure that it is a legitimate copy of FileMaker Server Advanced with a valid install key? Where are the PDF's? Where is the license key paperwork? Did the guy have rights to sell or transfer to you in the first place? As Wim points out, FileMaker Server is a very valuable and useful piece of software.
IdealData Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 If you got the FM Server included in the deal but there was no charge for it then your "dealer" can't have provided a genuine copy with the valid licensing - otherwise he would be seriously out of pocket. On the other hand, if you have paid a realistic price then you have been over sold - as it is clear you have no need for FM Server so you can ask for a refund and return the product to the dealer. Either way you don't need to sell it - as you won' be out of pocket. Without genuine documentation you are unlikely to secure a proper sale.
Cabinetman Posted December 30, 2009 Author Posted December 30, 2009 After a lengthy phone call to FileMaker... in which even the tech miss spoke to begin with... it turns out that it is NOT a legal copy. Seems it was a return and is now reg. to FM. Sure it might/should work since I installed the FMP 10 Adv. without a hitch, the key IS valid AND I WAS told it could be used..basically... but that wouldn't be very honest now would it?. I never thought to check it myself to begin with. Glad I did! I've since gotten my money back but am in the same boat as before. I can't really spring for an upgrade from 9 to 10 but still need to... UGH !!!
