Newbies Simon Kemp Posted November 2, 2000 Newbies Posted November 2, 2000 Hi, I wonder if anyone can advise me. I have a series of FileMaker Pro 2 for Mac databases containing geological data that were setup and populated back in the early 1990s (200+ fields per database including check boxes and free text fields exceeding 255 characters). I now have a requirement to export this data to Oracle. The export facilities in FileMaker Pro 2 are fairly limited so I was wondering, would it be easier to buy a Filemaker 5 licence ? Is there a direct export to Oracle from FileMaker 5 ? Any help would be gratefully received. Vaughan Posted November 2, 2000 Posted November 2, 2000 FMP 5 (Macintosh) allows export to tab- and comma-separated text, SYLK, DIF, WKS, BASIC, MEGE, HTMLtable, FileMakr Pro and Edition file. No mention of Oracle... What is special about your database that export in tab- or comma-separated text cannot deal with? If you are concerned about losing text formatting, I don't think that any export will hold it.
Newbies Simon Kemp Posted November 3, 2000 Author Newbies Posted November 3, 2000 Thanks for the info Vaughan. I think tab separated text is the way to go. Is there a way to export the data to include the field name ? i.e. produce spreadsheet-style pages with the field-name as the column title ? This is imporatnt for me as I have so many fields. ------------------ Simon J Kemp British Geological Survey Kingsley Dunham Centre Keyworth Nottingham UK NG12 5GG Tel: +44(0)115 9363448 Fax: +44(0)115 9363352 e-mail: [email protected] web: http://www.bgs.ac.uk i-shop: http://www.british-geological-survey.co.uk/

Try exporting in the Merge or SLYK formats, both of which should export Field Names as the first row. ------------------ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Kurt Knippel Consultant Database Resources mailto:[email protected] http://www.database-resources.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
