Modify layout on server?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Question that came up today. Can a layout be modified on a server.

Here is what I want to do with all users off (we only have 6 so it will not be hard), I log in to the server from my workstation with full access and make changes to the layout, basically moving some fields around that I put in the wrong order.

Will this work, or do I need to pull the db off the server and make the modifications and then upload it again?

Thanks,

M.L.

You can simply login with developer credentials. Other users can remain logged in.

Hi Michelle,

Simply moving fields around while Users are in the system should be fine and I did it regularly prior to vs. 11 but if you change the tabbing or stacking order and a User is in a relevant field at the moment you save the layout AND it has a script trigger attached then I would not take the risk.

Making changes to served file when Users aren't is system is fine. You can turn the number of users to 1 in Admin Console after checking that nobody is in so you are the only User or you can use checkbox to prohibit Users from moving off opening Menu while you work (providing them with conditional notice on main menu indicating closed for servicing); no need to unserve the files. Again, only in my opinion. :)

BTW, the best thing I've ever done was begin always splitting UI and Data. In this way, I can make changes to the UI and then just switch the files at night. FREEDOM!
