Need dynamic portal based on selections made in other fields in layout, outside of portal

I think what I need is a portal, but there may be a way to accomplish my objective with a find script. Please see my 'About Me' section for a description of the project I'm referring to.

This might help describe it as well:

[TABLE]Field

1- [isolation Points]Component, Description, Position, Notes

2- [Equipment]Name, Description, System, Notes

3- [Equip_IsoPnts] Equipment:Name, Isolation Points:Component

The 3rd table relates the first field in tables 1 & 2. On my layout, there's a dropdown that allows the user to select a value from the Equipment:Name field. Below that, in the layout, I would like to insert a table that lists all records from the Isolation Point table that are related to the Equipment:Name the user selected.

Is a portal the way to go? Does anyone know how to set this up?

First, you should be using IDs rather than names for your relationships - that way you can rename an equipment or a component without breaking the links.

Not sure what you mean by that - perhaps one of these might help?

Ok, I'll start by adding IDs to the Equipment and Isolation Points table.

I'll try and explain the portal a little better-

There will be multiple isolation points in table one that all can be used to isolate mechanical or electrical energy/flow to multiple pieces of equipment.

There will also be multiple pieces of equipment in table two that have one or more associated isolation points that need to be secured before work can begin on that equipment.

So, it's a many to many relationship in the 3rd table. The 1st field in table 3 would list the equipment name (or ID once I make the change you suggested), and the 2nd field would list the ID from one of the required isolation points that go with that piece of equipment. The next record would list that same Equipment ID and the next Isolation Point.

So, when sorted by Equipment ID, there would be many occurrences of that piece of equipment repeated in one field but the Isolation points listed next to it would each be different. And if you sorted by Isolation Points, you would see several points repeated listed next to different pieces of equipment they can be used to isolate.

Something like this: [letters for Equipment, numbers for isolation points]

A:1

A:2

A:3

B:2

B:3

B:4

There are two piece of equipment that each have three isolation point. If a user selects A from the dropdown on my layout when filling out the form, I would want a portal table to list all Isolation Points records from Table 1 (in my first post) in a nestled table (portal?) on the form

In this case the form would be filled with

Isolation Point 1, Component, Description, Position, Notes

Isolation Point 2, Component, Description, Position, Notes

Isolation Point 3, Component, Description, Position, Notes

but if they had chosen equipment B from the dropdown then the portal would list the records for points 2-4. Sorry to be so long winded. I hope that makes it more clear. I'll add the IDs and check out the links you posted. Thanks!

The portal-to-portal method in the first link is very close to what I'm looking for. I just need to modify it so that I have a dropdown where they have the products portal. But the way the info is pulled from the related records and populated into the 2nd portal is exactly what I'm looking for. I'll see if I can figure out how to modify the selection method. I don't think I need the first portal.

Thanks again! :)
