Import from one field to multiple fields via relationship

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a database that lists buildings by post code, we also have another table / Database that lists windspeed by postcode

Database B (Premises) is related to Database A (postcode / windspeed ) via the postcode matching.

Problem is only one value for windspeed is imported per instance of postcode, in the premises database, meaning the rest of the premises records with the same post code do not seem to get displayed or imported.

I have tried just placing the fields in the layout view of the related Table… B , I have tried doing a calculation and neither work… only one instance of the postcode is imported.

For example if say postcode sw19 5ep has 10 premises listed in table B only one record will show a wind speed ...

Very ODD.

I must be doing something wrong….

IIUC, you are importing windspeed-by-postcode data? If so, you should import it into the Winspeeds table (what you called Database A). Hopefully, the imported data has values for Postcode, Windspeed and Date, and any record in the Premises table should automatically "see" the related (i.e. matching postcode) records that you have imported.

You may need to place a portal into Windspeeds on a layout of Premises, since each location is bound to have several related records in Windspeeds (one for each date?).

I have a relationship between the two tables… based just on postcode...

The premises database sees the wind speed / Postcode database through this and it works to an extent, however the premises database only displays one instance of windspeed for each postcode area, although as you say there are sometimes more than one premises for each postcode.

The premises database does not actually have fields for the wind speed I nearly placed the field from the related table in the layout view for that database. Normally I would expect this to as you say just see the result...

I have tried actually creating the fields and importing the data based on the postcode but get the same result….

however the premises database only displays one instance of windspeed for each postcode area, although as you say there are sometimes more than one premises for each postcode.

Do you have a portal on the layout of Premises? Without it, only the first related record in Windspeeds will be displayed.

No,

I am obviously going to have to re think this, I can see I am missing something...

I just wanted the values listed by each premises.

I will have a big think...

It's not so much the postcodes that need to match it is the wind speed and that could be across multiple postcodes….

is there no way to pull in the wind data to more than one target field ?

I am afraid you have lost me at this point. I thought that each location has a permanent postcode, while the wind speed keeps changing daily.

no each postcode has many properties in it, the windspeed is a constant.

I want to just import the windspeed or view it in relation to postcodes...

Seems only the first property with a matching postcode gets the windspeed, the rest do not….

no each postcode has many properties in it, the windspeed is a constant.

Please explain. Perhaps a sample of the data would help.

Hmmm . . . In the real world, something like wind speed is certainly not constant. I'm obviously missing something here.

It might be the average windspeed, or the 100 year maximum or something. Either way, this is conflicting with that I (and probably others) assumed you wanted.

"Problem is only one value for windspeed is imported per instance of postcode..."

You need to set up the relationship and portal as others before have suggested.

it's a yearly average over a 5 year period...

so it's constant

Excellent. So set up the relationship and portal as discussed earlier.

BTW there is no "importing" done with this, it's a relationship.

I would really like to import the windspeed that relates to each location surely we can do that ?

it's based on the postcode for each location, surely we can get that value from the related postcode into each record for location, filemaker must be able to do that ?

Thanks.

if I have one table with a set of values, how can I import a related set of values based on two fields matching, wether a value is imported once or many times would depend on the first field matching… surely I can do this ?

No need to import, use a lookup.

it was corrupt data, a preceding and sometimes trailing space on the imported data...

How can I remove that ?
