Arin Posted September 21, 2000 Posted September 21, 2000 8.6 or 9.0.4, what's faster/more stable? I've got a 7100 with a 266Mhz G3 in it that I use for running FMP 5. I run about 15 DB's on this machine. I plan to upgrade to FMP Unlimited and use it for the backend of a web site that's connected to MacOSXS Apache via WSC. Right now it's running 8.6, and everything seem fine, but I'm about to re-format to clean the thing up before I start using it in production, so I thought now might be a good opportunity to upgrade. My main concern is about any FMP Unlimited conflicts with the old hardware and the new OS (9.0.4) -- Any suggestions, Advice, Experiences?
Newbies AlanStewart Posted September 25, 2000 Newbies Posted September 25, 2000 I'm managing roughly 30 Macs using both 8.6 and 9.0.4. There does seem to be a slight stability improvement with OS9, but overall, I'm happy with both. One critical point: make sure you update virtually every app on your drive to the latest version if you upgrade to 9: that version changed the way that the Mac OS works with files a bit, and it affected quite a few titles out there. For more specific info, go to www.macfixit.com and look in their OS9 section. Hope this helps. A
LiveOak Posted September 26, 2000 Posted September 26, 2000 As a general rule, I try to keep my servers off of the "bleeding edge" of operating system technology. For servers, stability is very important. Most often the apps they are running don't require the very latest OS. I'd stay with 8.6 for a while. I'd also strip the OS down to the bare essentials. -bd

System 9.04 runs like a dog on our older machines (we have about 25 macs). Unless you need sys 9 for a particular reason, you might want to keep your older system although a clean install is a good idea. Just my perspective.
Newbies Tim Posted October 11, 2000 Newbies Posted October 11, 2000 I upgraded to Mac OS 8.6, and I'm having trouble with Claris Organizer. I get "unassigned memory exceptions" , error type 2, error type 11. FMP now replaces Claris Organizer. Does anyone know if I can transfer my Claris Organizer files easily to FMP, if that will solve my problems, if there is some way I can continue to use Claris Organizer, or upgrade to FMP without losing my data?

Actually Claris Organizer has evolved into the Palm Desktop application. You should be able to directly transfer your file to this. It is a free download from www.palm.com. FMP is an all purpose database system, not a replacement for Organizer. You can probably get your information from Organizer exported to a text format, which can then be imported into Filemaker. But you will need to setup all the fields and layouts. Try Palm Desktop first, it should do the trick. ------------------ =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Kurt Knippel Consultant Database Resources mailto:[email protected] http://www.database-resources.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
