challenge: sum of related repeating fields

Featured Replies

The attached file explains and solves the problem using a script.

But there is a more elegant way ( w/o a script ) that can work even on FMP7... how do you think to solve ?

You can make it work by creating a related table and setting the relation. Then you'll have to make a summary field in that new related table and it will make all your job.

Hi Daniele,

When you put things in form of a riddle, my logical ( anal, nit-pick ) mind gets lost.  But let me see if I know what you want.  You want the totals but without script?

Define a summary field in Table B which is total of Repeating B (summarize reps individually).  Change the summary field on the layout to display all 6 reps horizontally.

If that isn't it, please be a bit more verbose so I can grok what you want me to see and I'll try again.   :)

Yes, that is the solution.
My compliments to LaRetta and Paavo.
I had to think about this quite a bit before solving.

When I first saw your demo, that is what I thought you were doing - using a summary field.  I've never used it before but that is what I would have reached for to get your totals.  Summary fields rock and they are greatly under-valued.

It won't be long before you come up with something else nifty for us, Daniele!  It is these kinds of discoveries that makes FileMaker incredibly fun!
