remote access to FM Server 13

Featured Replies

I have a small lan (3 workstations) connected to fmserver 13. OS is win server 2008 R2 . It is working  without any problems. I would also like to connect to it remotely with a WAN connection. The IP address of the server is 192.168.1.102. I know I have to forward a port on the router which is an Asus RT-N66U. This is a screen shot of my settings. However when I run a test to check if Port 5003 is open it fails.

The port range on the firewall should just be "5003", not "5002,5004".

Where did you run the test from to see if the port is open?  For best results, you have to be outside your own network.

Thanks I did run it from within the network. I will try later today from outside the network. When you set up the router do you have to do that from the server or can it be from any workstation? Does the server have to have a static Ip for this to work?

You can adjust the router from any workstation, it's all through the router's internal web server anyway.

Your FMS box does need to have a static internal IP address, otherwise the router will not find a destination to forward the traffic to when the IP address changes.

I did make the changes you suggested. I used a utility program from portforwarding.com to set the servers ip address to static, but so far it's till not working. I have been testing it from another location.

Are you sure you are using the server's external (WAN) address?  The IP address you mentioned in post #1 is the server's internal (LAN side) IP.

If your ISP does not assign you a static ip, and it's very unlikely that it does, you can use a service such as noip.com to manage dynamic dns. The ip address you need to access when outside your local network is generally referred to as a Public IP. Most ISP supplied routers work on dhcp so your address changes from time to time.

Barry685, are you still having issue with this?  I would highly recommend you consider paying for a static IP solution from your Internet Service Provider (ISP).  Once you have that setup, you'll need to configure your router to assign a static IP to your FileMaker server machine.  That way, when you're outside of your network you can connect to your FileMaker solution using the static IP that you assigned.  I can explain in further detail if that is what're looking for.
