Newbies parthis Posted May 30, 2002 Newbies Posted May 30, 2002 Hi, I like to know is it possible to have to Macs on an network using the same filemaker database at the same time. The Macs can connect to each other using Filesharing. If I can do that, how do I do it? Thank you
LiveOak Posted May 30, 2002 Posted May 30, 2002 Yes. The machine with the files on its hard drive will (should) open the files first and become the host. TURN FILE SHARING OFF ON THIS MACHINE. It is not needed for FileMaker to share files, FM is its own networking environment. Set each file you wish to share to multi-user in the File Menu.Make sure the networking preferences are setup for each copy of FM. This works with FM versions 2 and up. On the second machine (guest), open the files using File Menu-->Open-->Hosts Button-->(select file)-->Open Button. Just to be perfectly clear NEVER, NEVER, NEVER! open the files by turning file sharing on and double clicking a file on a remote (shared) volume. I wouldn't harp on this, but it causes massive problems and is the typical way the unenlightened try to network FM. -bd
Newbies parthis Posted June 3, 2002 Author Newbies Posted June 3, 2002 Thank you... Also, I would like to know can you use one single copy of Filemaker on two macs on a network at the same time. I know it can be done for pcs but I am having problem with the macs. Thank you again
Vaughan Posted June 4, 2002 Posted June 4, 2002 The Mac version of FMP 4 has a network copy protection scheme. When FMP launches it polls the network for other copies of FMP and checks their serial number. If they are the same (indicating the same copy of FMP has been illegally installed on more than one computer) FMP displays an alert message and quits. Visit eBay and buy yourself another copy of FMP 4.
