  3. You like to have a FileMaker Server on the go with your Macbook (Pro) M1 or M2? Install Parallels and let it install Windows 11. Within the ARM version of Windows 11, you can install FileMaker Pro 19.5 and it seems to work fine. Since there is no native version for ARM64, the application runs in emulation within Windows. You can also install FileMaker Server. Running a FMS on Windows 11 and not Windows Server 2016 or 2019 is not really supported, but can work. The installer will complain about missing Internet Information Services and Application Request Routing. But you can go on one of the Microsoft websites and download the Application Request Routing installer …

  4. For years we have nice goodies for FileMaker developers on macOS and now we got one for Windows: You can search within a relationship with a search field: I tried for years to do something there. But when the plugin asks Windows about what is on the window, the OS would say: zero controls. Yes, the normal Windows API doesn't see the controls since they are all done in C++ classes drawing directly into the window. Without a handle to work on, we gave up several attempts to do something. But a few days ago I looked again on various windows and I noticed that the third tab actually uses a real Win32 control to show the graph for relationships. Probably because this …

  6. Started by MonkeybreadSoftware,

Sometimes FileMaker developers miss a script trigger to run when you switch between windows. We usually recommend people check if Window.Currentfunction returns a new number. And you may do that with Schedule functions. Here is a script to start a schedule to check the window regularly: # current window Set Variable [ $currentWindow ; Value: MBS("Window.Current") ] Set Variable [ $r ; Value: MBS( "FM.VariableSet"; "WindowActivateTriggerCurrentWindow"; $currentWindow ) ] # Schedule a calculation to check window every second Set Variable [ $schedule ; Value: MBS( "Schedule.EvaluateAfterDelay"; 1; "Let([ lastWindow = MBS( \"FM.VariableGet\"; \"WindowActiva…

  7. We resolved the problems we had with Claris Server and now our plugin works there. If you have a Claris Pro or Server, feel free to later try the 12.5pr4 version of MBS Plugin. On the licensing we got asked if we sell Claris Pro/Server plugin separately. What a terrific business idea! But no, we don't ask for extra money to move from FileMaker to Claris. Just make sure you have a recent license, which includes 12.5 (or later), so you can use our current plugin versions. And eventually most of our customers may move in a few years, when the Claris product line has a more attractive offering compared to the FileMaker line. We'll update documentation over the time to a…

  8. Do you know the additional functions for containers that the MBS FileMaker Plugin offers? In this blog article I would like to introduce you to a few of them. Let's start with the loading of a file into the container field. For this we use the function Container.ReadFile. With it we read files via a native file path. This path can be defined by a text field or by the FileDialog functions with the help of a dialog. This function can be used not only in FileMaker Pro, but also on the server. We must pay attention that the server is authorized to access the files, otherwise it does not work. Beside the file path also a mode can be specified. If no mode is specified, th…

  9. Sometimes we need to make screenshots or present with FileMaker Pro or Claris Pro in other languages and you can have at least eleven languages: You know all the languages in those menu bars? I made a couple of little AppleScript apps to launch FileMaker Pro 18, 19 and Claris Pro in another language. So I can double click the French one and another instance of FileMaker Pro launches on my Mac with French localization. Download: LaunchFileMakerInDifferentLanguages.dmg We updated this to include Claris Pro, include Apple Silicon code and proper entitlements to avoid permission errors. You may still be asked once to allow automation, e.g. like this: P…

  10. We like to show you a few functions related to CSV and what you can do with combining various functions of our MBS FileMaker Plugin. Usually you get a CSV file as an export from some other database, e.g. a list of sales. Read Textfile If you like to read a text file, you can simply use our Text.ReadTextFile function. Pass the path and the text encoding to use and you get back the text. The encoding should be right for umlauts or accents. Usually everyone uses UTF-8 nowadays, but we also support various older encodings. If you have the file in a container, please check the Text.ReadTextFromContainer function, which takes a container value as reference. Parse CS…

  13. How to automatically install MBS Plugin in FileMaker without having the plugin? We have gzip versions of our plugins here: gzip downloads. There you find the current URLs for all our plugins and the version.json with the version information. You may do a script to automatically install the plugins. Now we got the question how to load the MBS Plugin with Insert From URL for an installation, so here is an example script: # normal release here Set Variable [ $URL ; Value: "https://www.monkeybreadsoftware.com/filemaker/files/gzip/version.json" ] Set Variable [ $JSON ; Value: "" ] Insert from URL [ Select ; With dialog: Off …

  32. Started by MonkeybreadSoftware,

A cool new thing comes with the MBS FileMaker Plugin 12.3 for us: You can connect in FileMaker to a Mongo DB server and create on this server databases, collections and documents with various functions, search in documents and delete them as needed. The special thing about Mongo DB is that it is not a relational database based on tables and relations, but its data has a JSON like structure. This allows you to make queries that were previously not possible due to the restriction of relationships or table boundaries. So find out who is longer in your company: the carpet in the warehouse or your trainee. We add a new example file about Mongo DB to our plugin examples. …

  35. For MBS Plugin 12.4 we implemented a long standing wish from various FileMaker developers: Code Folding. As you know our plugin highlights matching script lines for If and Loop blocks. So you see what lines belongs to what other line. Now when we detect such a block, we add a little control on the between the line number and the text. You can click that control to hide some lines and later click it again to show them. When you save the script, FileMaker reloads it or you start dragging a line, all lines show again. Our line hiding is only temporary until something unhides them. Please try and let us know the if you find issues. As usual, this fea…

  41. Started by MonkeybreadSoftware,

In this article we want to introduce you the new functions from the MBS FileMaker Plugin in version 12.3. MongoDB The coolest feature in new release is the new Mongo DB topic. You can now use FileMaker to access MongoDB databases, read, write and delete data. The special thing about Mongo DB is that it is not a rational database that is limited by relationships and tables, but is based on a JSON-like structure that also allows unusual queries. For example, you can formulate searches to see who has been in your company longer, the carpet in the warehouse or your employee. In rational databases, your carpet wouldn't normally appear in the same table as your employe…

  51. In this article we want to introduce you the new functions from the MBS FileMaker Plugin in version 12.2. Error Count for MBS functions For years we already have the isError function in the MBS FileMaker Plugin. We can call this after a MBS function to see if the previous MBS function returned an error. If you use many MBS functions in a script this can get confusing and it might be enough for you, e.g. if you are testing a script, to know if a plugin function in the whole script throws an error at all. For this we have developed two new functions. With the HadErrors function you get back the number that is currently in the error counter. This will be incremented…

  52. At the dotfmp conference we got a nice idea for a feature: MBS FileMaker Plugin already scans script lines to find missing variables and show a little warning for undeclared variables. We added the feature to scan for comments containing URLs. If we find an URL, we add a little button to the end of the line, which currently shows an arrow and a globe: You may click on the line to select it and then click on the control we add. Maybe double click may also work directly. But only if the list of script steps doesn't consume the click, it will come to our control. You can configure this via our preferences dialog or the new SyntaxColoring.CommentLinks.SetEnabled fun…
