You may know that FileMaker has variables within Let(), $ variables in a script and $$ variables as per file globals. But MBS FileMaker Plugin provides higher levels. Our plugin based variables (see FM.VariableSet) stay in the process space of the current loaded plugin. But there is also shared memory to store something per computer, independent of the current application. On a FileMaker Server you can have three times the plugin installed and also on each web direct worker. Since we all love to make clones for using the data migration tool, we like to pass through some data with the clone. But a clone can't have records! If we like to pass data in the clone like a version number, we need to carry it inside the schema. This happens by putting the text into the default value of a field. Like having a special table for global settings and there a version field with the version number as default value. At the Spanish developer conference an attendee asked me about whether we have something to show a nice colored progress bar in a portal, preferable possible for Web Direct, too. After a bit of research, I found an easy way to do this with MBS FileMaker Plugin and without using web viewers and JavaScript. We simply use GraphicsMagick functions to generate a nice picture on demand and show it as a container field. This can either be a script to generate the picture on the fly using a trigger. Or it can be a calculated field to generate it when needed. In both cases you can trigger the recreation of the image by changing a field with the percent value. …

While you can always load an existing document with conditional formatting or diagrams and just fill the cells with data, we now can create the rules for conditional formatting in a script. Let us show you the output of a new example we made for a client. On the left you see the final page and on the right side the same PDF but with visible boxes for the text output. As you see on the test page, we got a couple of cool things here: We have a header line on top, which depending on the height moves down the other text. Sometimes the little things make live easier. We had for some time various contextual menus in FileMaker to copy what is in a list. New for 14.1 of MBS Plugin is the option to copy the full field specification (table occurrence and field name together) if you click on a field name in a field picker like in the picture below: e.g. in the example above it would copy "Assets::Type" instead of just copying the text "Type". Please try later in 14.1 pre-release. You may enjoy that our copy content command will recognize checkboxes in a list and provide the value of the checkbox as 0 or 1 or - for mixed state.

Recently a few clients run into a problem with using ODBC databases: IM004 [iODBC][Driver Manager]Driver's SQLAllocEnv() failed The ODBC manager (called iODBC) can't load the ODBC driver for the database you like to connect to. By default on macOS we load "/usr/lib/libiodbc.2.dylib" as the ODBC manager, but this library seems to be outdated. For some time now we tried to load various ODBC drivers like Actual Tech's one directly with the plugin by putting it into the connection options for our SQL functions. But loading drivers directly doesn't always work well as the ODBC manager does some text encoding work and translates between older and newer API calls. …

Recently a client asked if we could help on entering addresses. Like to fix typos, lookup zip codes or split addresses into fields like for street name, house number and city. We got an idea and made a new sample file for you to validate address with MapKit. We use the CLGeocoder functions to geocode the address. Once done, we can inspect the result and query the various parts of the response. This includes the thoroughfare (aka street) and the subThoroughfare (house number). At Claris Engage we got the question about how to print a web viewer in FileMaker. While FileMaker has nothing built-in in that direction, we can provide a solution in our MBS FileMaker Plugin with the WebView.Print function. Print You can add a print button to the layout, assign it a "Set Variable" script step to run and then call MBS( "WebView.Print"; WebViewerRef ) there. For the WebViewerRef parameter you can pass the name of the web viewer and our plugin should find it on the current window. For more difficult cases you can use WebView.FindByName and specify the window with a window reference. It may be useful to tune the website beforehand with some JavaScr…

At Claris Engage we learnt from Wim Decorte that it may be better to disable advanced tools if possible. Quite a few ways to hack a FileMaker solution go by using the debugger to check scripts or data viewer to read or evaluate some things. Advanced tools are great for developers, but normal users may not need these tools. You can use the checkbox in the preferences dialog: Let's go and check via plugin on whether advanced tools are enabled. Since HOnza posted about his Initiative ’24 about making FileMaker calculations quicker, I spend some time thinking on how to do this practically. Like what could be optimized if Claris puts work into their calculation engine. And I got some ideas: Math seems to be a problem sometimes. Have a flag internal for number values on whether they are 32-bit integers. If math functions are invoked and the flag is set for both values, perform integer math directly with normal C math instructions and skip the precision math library. E.g. the normal "j = j + 1 " in a loop doesn't need to do precision math. Cache parsed calculations. Evaluate() taking a text parse…
