  1. Thanks Vaughan that is the approach I decided to take.
  2. I cannot change the value of global fields while the file is being hosted by Filemaker server. I have to download the file and open with FMP Client. Do you know of anyway to get around this? Is this by design or a bug?
  3. Has this issue been addressed yet? This is Apple Computer as it's best! Never who forget who owns FMI, Inc.
  4. Hey Chris, You will have to get an Apple Airport 802.11b or Airport Extreme card 802.11g for the ibook/powerbook make sure you pick up a torx screwdriver to install. Thanks, PSC Also concerning Mac clockspeed vs PC while it's true PPC is faster than it's Intel AMD counterpart keep in mind P4's are running 3.4 ghz and I personally think that OS X has more overhead the XP Pro. Also I would heed Stanley's advise concerning drive speed a photoshop file uses 2-3x file size so if you don't have the RAM it will hit your scratch disk, You may want to consider an external firewire drive to put your scratch disk on.
  5. Check Out http://www.cnsplug-ins.com/products.htm?product=SMTPit They have a plug-in called SMTPit. I have used this in one of my solutions and it worked well, the company offers very good support and they have resonable developer rates. Good Luck! PSC
  6. I would recommend you buy the fastest PowerBook you can afford. Stay away from the ibooks they are much too slow especially if you are used to a fast Wintel notebook. Also I would try to get the highest resolution display and lots of RAM. To answer your question concerning OS X on G3 Molases comes to mind. Good Luck! PSC
  7. I have tested my runtime solution with Windows 98 2nd edition and encoutered no problems, however if Microsoft does not want to support Win98 why should Filemaker, Inc. ? It's time for customers to upgrade anyway Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro are better and more stable Operating Systems! We tend to forget how cheap Wintel boxes are these days. My two cents! Thanks, PSC
  8. Hey Billy, I would imagine you are going to have to do a couple of conversions. I would start with FMP 4.1, Then work my way up to FMP 7. If you do not have 4.1, I have it somewhere you can send me the file I will update it for you. However I will tell you from personal experience that it is wiser to start from scratch and just import the data. There are many changes in scripting and calculations from version 2.1 to 7. Thanks, PSC
  9. Filemaker Server runs as a service. It will run on Win2k Pro however it is not supported by FMI. I would recommend investing in Win2k Pro Server. Thanks, PSC
  10. This cannot be done. I've been asking FMI for years to add this feature. Good Luck! P.S. "blank record showing fields..." just prints the layout the way it would look in preview mode only with boxes where the data would be, not field name.
  11. Hello Folks, Does anyone have detailed instructions for configuring FMS 5.5 on a Win2k Server with "Active Directory". The documentation is a bit ambiguous. Thanks! complete-db
  12. Do you mean Windows 2000 Professional? Thanks for your help. PSC
  13. Hello, I am in the process of configuring a new network for a client. I had planned to buy an IBM server with Windows Small Business Server 2003 Standard Edition. However after checking with FMI they don't support SBS 2003 (how lame). I really hate having to dish out $1000 for an outdated Filemaker Pro 5.5 Server and then having to dish out another $1000 for W2k Server(SBS 2003 is only $600). I only have 5 users sharing about 15 files. Would I be better off going with a WinXP Pro box with Filemaker Client? Also would hosting Qbooks Pro Files on the same box really hurt my performance? Thanks, PSC
  14. These are the script steps that could be run from Filemaker Pro using IWP Directly from Instant Web Publishing Up to three. FileMaker Pro script step New Record/Request Go to Record/Request/Page [] Go to Layout [] Go to Field [] Enter Browse Mode [] Sort [] Enter Find Mode [] Show all records Exit record Perform Find

  16. Hello All, I have a find script where I am using global fields to simulate a find in browse mode(do not want users in find mode). I am using the insert calculated result function to find a range of dates. Which is only one set of fields to be used as find criteria. The problem comes when I try to initialize them. I have tried "" or TextToDate("") but these generate invalid find errors Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for you help. Paul S. Cuscione pcuscione@nyc.rr.com

  20. Unfortunately you cannot do what you want to accomplish using Instant Web Publishing. You will have to go with a CDML/Lasso solution. Regards Paul S. Cuscione Complete DB
  21. Hi Paul, Have you tried FMPtraining.com. Jerry Robin is a great trainer! I went to one of his sessions at the last DEVCON and it was very helpful. I am considering some lasso training. I think it's a natural extention to FM if you are interested in Web Database intergration. Good Luck Paul S. Cuscione Complete Database Soultions
  22. Hello, I have an application where I need to import data from a tab text file into two filemaker databases that have a parent/children relationship. Can anyone advise the best way to approach this. The data looks like this. parentrecordA1->Field A...Field K childrecordA1->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordA2->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordA3->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordA4->childfield1...childfield12 parentrecordB1->Field A...Field K childrecordB1->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordB2->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordB3->childfield1...childfield12 childrecordB4->childfield1...childfield12 Thanks for any help you can offer.
