newbie... and need some advice

Featured Replies

I already have existing Filemaker Pro database(s) using Filemaker Pro 4.0 running on a network. It's working out fine.

Just got a "designated lease line" for internet use and would like to know what are my options in order to improve/enhance my solutions. I also need to connect/update some fmp [on remote computer].

Have been hearing web companion. what is it? and is it applicable with me.

It is plugin in FM 4 and above.

Simply put -- it is mini web server for serving FM databases on the Internet.

Hi, do you need a web interface or to be able to work with a remote client? Either are possible.

There are a number of options, but be aware of possible security issues:

How many registered ip addresses do you have?

If you register a domain anme against one of them, then you can use that to locate your FilMaker server.

With the Filemaker server on your DMZ, it would have the registered address, but that's not very secure.

With the Filemaker server on your internal network, the Firewall can map the external address to the internal, or you can use a VPN solution on the Firewall which is the most secure.

If you want to serve your data on web pages, put a webserver on your DMZ and open just the ports you need through the Firewall between that IP address only and your FMP server only. WSC on the webserver can provide the link to the data. This is very effective and secure, but if you've designed your database just with client use in mind - like lots of scripts and stuff - you may need to re-think the design to get the same functionality ove the web.

regards, jeff
