If I change the name on an existing field in the database, will all references to that field be updated as well?

What about search selections in scripts?

Anything else I need to think of?

Thanks,

Yes, it will automatically "update" your script.

This is the same for layouts.

One thing I came accross though for layouts :

Say you have Layout1

If you copy the "layout", it will come to "Layout 1 copy"

If after working on this copy, you decide to delete "Layout 1" and rename "Layout 1 copy" to "Layout 1", you will have to reselect the Layout.

At least that happened to me !!!

If you happen to have Developer, you can change all references in one whack!

Isn't that just for changing file names?

When changing field names, I know it updates automatically in all scripts, but what about related files. Will those be updated (provided the file is open)? Does the developer tool help with that?

I do not use developer and have changed FIELD names without problems for related files. I suspect that FM identifies fields through a hiddenID that is set at field creation time and not modified by any editing to the field.

I do not hold developper but encountered no problem in relationships after renaming field names with FM Pro 5.5.

You do have problem when redefining file names* or layouts, but I presume that what is in the file will automatically be updated

*One precision : When redefining a File A to become File A1, the relationship "definition" formerly created didn't disappear. When trying to use this relationship, you will simply end up with a message "Couldn't find File A". If all your files are in the same folder, it would be easy to identify File A1 in the folder and tell FM to use this file instead. Assuming the fields for relationship in File A1 didn't changed.

you just have to tell FM where is the file

I had a whole bunch of relationships in FMP 5.5 in a complex series of files and changed ALL the field names in all the files. I fully expected to have to redefine the relationships and that effort would be a good experience. Unfortunately FM did it all automatically for me ;-)

Hi Alex,

I must say I also planned to change to Developper and really disagree with my own post here after reading this other thread.

Thanks again Adamkarwoski, Capkurt and Jason Woods....
