February 25, 200322 yr hello, How do i find "monsters" in "scarymonsterssuperfreaks" can't seem to find a way?? Thank you paul Apted
February 25, 200322 yr Author hmmmm, for some reason that didn't work ,any ideas i am using Fmpro 5.5 on osx thanks Paul apted
February 25, 200322 yr Because I suspect that you are using a different country version then me. Just a guess? Lee
February 26, 200322 yr Well, I thought these things were universal. Actually, all my calcs also differ from yours as I use " ; " while you (US) use " , ". Sorry for the saste of time Paul.
February 26, 200322 yr We all (even Paul) have to find some things out the hard way. The ; got me the first time someone posted a calculation, I told them they had made a typo and that it should be a , Ha, ha, ha, in two minutes, 5 or 6 people let me know that there was more than a US version of FileMaker. BTW the * is a find for zero or more characters (I guess zero is different than none). Lee
February 26, 200322 yr Author well ,can of worms opened here . i am using OSX fm 5.5 and US english , neither *monsters* or "monsters" work Any reason for this ,as usual the simple things tend to take the longest to figure out thanx Paul apted
February 26, 200322 yr Geeze that through me. So I did a quick try and found that you are correct. Use the > instead HTH Lee
February 26, 200322 yr I use the US version, and *monsters* works fine for me. There must be another problem.
February 26, 200322 yr Hi Bob, This is weird, I could have sworn that I tested *monster* before responding with the > suggestion. Now I just tried it again, and it worked. It's a great day when you learn something new. I can't believe that after using FileMaker for 15 years, and belonging to so many FileMaker discussion lists, that this is the first time I've seen this find. Once you break it down, it seems so obvious I wonder why I haven't seen it before. * = zero or more characters. So, it fits any pattern of text. zero or more before and zero or more after the word. Slick. For the record, I used FM 5.03 and OS 9.1 to test this. My apologies to Ugo for misleading him. Thanks Bob for pointing me in the right direction. HTH Lee
February 26, 200322 yr Author hmm ,i must be doing something stupid .i assume that you are not putting any spaces between "scarymonsterssuperfreaks". because i can't get it to work at all... Fm pro 5.5 ,jaguar Paul
February 26, 200322 yr To clarify: Field to be searched has scarymonsterssuperfreaks in it and you are searching for the word monsters. Right? Lee )
February 26, 200322 yr Paul, These Monsters are becoming my nightmare right now Please be explicit. After 15 posts and 48 views, I cannot imagine we are all talking about the same search. Please don't tell you are looking for monsters in any field in your database. Hi Lee, Never mind, I recently noticed FM had a script comment step from version 3.0. I use FM from version FM 2.1
February 26, 200322 yr When I tested this, I created a record with the exact text "scarymonsterssuperfreaks" (without the quotes) in one of the fields. Then I went into find mode and entered "*monsters*" (again without the quotes), clicked the find button, and it pulled up the record with scarymonsterssuperfreaks. If this is what you are doing, and it's not working, then it's very strange. BTW, I'm using FM5.5v2 US English on OS9. Maybe it's an OSX problem or something.
February 27, 200322 yr Bob, It seems the only one that is not getting it to show this way, is Paul. This is why I ask the clarification question earlier. Lee
